Maximise your tax savings with an HUF: A smart yet underused strategy
As the financial year draws to a close, taxpayers to scramble to minimize their tax outgo. While common deductions under Sections 80C and 80D get all the attention, one powerful yet underutilised tax-saving tool remains overlooked—the Hindu Undivided Family (HUF). Many shy away from it, fearing complexity, but with the right approach, an HUF can be a game-changer for tax planning and long-term wealth preservation.

Battle for the global elite: Paris and London’s wealth loss is Dubai’s gain
Paris. Cafes are bustling, the economy is showing signs of improvement and a shiny (stair-free) metro expansion is making the 15-minute city even more accessible. Yet there’s also the faintly audible sound of wealth on the move: Two locals inform me of plans to leave, one to Dubai and the other to Switzerland. In a similar vein to London’s fleeing non-doms and Brexit banking exiles, Paris is going through its own dose of ras-le-bol fiscal — the moment when the proverbial tax straw breaks the camel’s back — in President Emmanuel Macron’s twilight years. Taxes are going up on big business and the wealthy; Marine Le Pen is the presidential contender to beat in 2027; parliament is gridlocked and still fighting over pension reforms that tore the country apart in 2023. After an extraordinary run for Paris as the euro area’s investment-banking hub of choice, with the number of French financiers on seven-figure salaries almost doubling in four years, hiring plans are being put on ice.

Tesla's February market share in Europe drops despite EV pickup
As competition grows, and ahead of the launch of its new Model Y mid-size SUV, Elon Musk's battery-electric (BEV) brand has sold 42.6% fewer cars in Europe so far this year, data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) showed. Tesla commanded 1.8% of the total market and 10.3% of the BEV market in February, down from 2.8% and 21.6% last year respectively. It sold fewer than 17,000 cars in the European Union, Britain and European Free Trade Association countries, compared to over 28,000 in the same month in 2024. Tesla currently faces a number of challenges in Europe. The EV maker has a smaller, ageing lineup while traditional automaker rivals and new Chinese entrants alike continue to launch new, often cheaper electric models.

TRADING DAY-Tariff fears cool, tech sizzles
Nasdaq notches third-biggest rise this year The last full trading week of the quarter got off to a roaring start across most major stock markets on Monday, with investors buoyed by reports that the Trump administration's tariff blitz scheduled for April 2 may not be as heavy as feared. A solid pick-up in U.S. business activity helped cement the positive tone on Wall Street, and investors bought back some of the shares they'd aggressively sold off recently like Big Tech. Europe ended largely flat, but benchmark Asian, U.S. and global equity indices all rose sharply. Bond yields spiked higher, while 'safe-haven' gold fell for a third day to clock its longest losing streak since November.

Trump pushes US claims to Greenland as territory's leaders lambast US delegation trip
Donald Trump on Monday doubled down on his suggestion that the U.S. should take over Greenland as leaders from the semi-autonomous Danish territory criticized a planned trip there this week by a high-profile U.S. delegation. «I think Greenland is going to be something that maybe is in our future,» Trump told reporters after a meeting with officials in his cabinet, saying it was important for U.S. national security. Greenland's outgoing Prime Minister Mute Egede called plans by the U.S. delegation to visit an American military base and attend a dog sled race a «provocation», and said his caretaker government would not meet with the group. Trump said his administration was working with «people in Greenland» who want something to happen, but did not elaborate. «They're calling us,» he said. «We're not calling them.»

To ensure no losses in small-cap MF bets, SIP for at least 12 years
small-cap mutual funds if they do Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) in these schemes for at least 10 years. According to a study by asset valuation analytics firm Valuemetrics Technologies on monthly rolling returns for SIPs between April 2005 and March 2025 in the Nifty Small Cap 250 Total Returns Index, such investments made for three to ten years have incurred losses (see table). For instance, the highest return made in a three-year SIP in the Nifty Small Cap 250 TRI in these 20 years is 42.1% on an annualised basis. At the same time, the value has eroded by as much as 64.70% in the worst-case scenario for three-year SIPs in this period, the study showed. Similarly, investors lost 0.4% on an annualised basis in a 10-year SIP, but if the SIP continued for 12 years, the minimum return increased to 2.4%.

Traders pick jewellery again, hope gold's sparkle rubs on
Jewellery stocks have gained traction over the past week after failing to earn returns in the previous three months. The stocks were under pressure on account of concerns over rising gold prices which may affect demand. However, companies expect to maintain the growth momentum in the March quarter as high prices are likely to support the top-line growth amid slower volume growth. Store expansion and rising average transaction values are key growth drivers for the sector. Listed jewellery companies including Titan Company, Kalyan Jewellers, PN Gadgil Jewellers, Thangamayil Jewellery, and Senco Gold have gained 2-20% over the past week compared with 4-40% drop over a three-month period. Fluctuating gold prices continue to be a double-edged sword for jewellery retailers. While higher prices boost revenue, they also impact affordability leading to softer volume growth. However, demand, among other factors, also depends on seasonal factors such as weddings and festivals.

'Will not accept if it leads to tyranny': Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis on Kamra's remark on Eknath Shinde
Devendra Fadnavis has taken a strong stand on the alleged disparaging remarks made by stand-up artist Kunal Kamra against the state deputy CM Eknath Shinde. The Chief Minister while speaking in the state Assembly on Monday stated that the government would not accept freedom of expression if it leads to tyranny. The chief minister said, «We appreciate humour and satire. We accept political satire, but we do not accept freedom of expression if it leads to tyranny.» He stated that Kamra staged «low-quality» comedy. «This artist makes statements against the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice; he wants to gain fame by creating controversy. He targeted Eknath Shinde and staged low-quality comedy,» adding that the people will decide whether Eknath Shinde is a traitor or a selfish person. Further referring to Eknath Shinde as the heir to Balasaheb Thackeray's legacy, he questioned the opposition, asking whether they had given a «supari» for the stand-up show. «Balasaheb Thackeray's legacy is with Eknath Shinde… and those on the opposite bench support him, have you given a supari? This Kamra tweeted a photo of the Constitution; if he had read the Constitution, he would not have committed such atrocities,» he added.

Kamra show row: Fadnavis must recover damages from Shiv Sainiks involved in vandalism, says Raut
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Monday demanded that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recover damages from Shiv Sainiks who vandalised the studio where stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra's show was shot. Speaking to reporters, Raut alleged that there was «gunda raj» (hooliganism) in the state capital and said Fadnavis was incapable of handling the home department. The Mumbai police have registered an FIR against Kamra for allegedly making defamatory remarks against Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a show. The police also registered a case against nearly 40 Shiv Sena workers for allegedly vandalising the Habitat Studio in Mumbai's Khar area, where Kamra's show with «gaddar» (traitor) jibe at Shinde was filmed, and a hotel where the studio is located. The comedian taunted Shinde using a modified version of a Hindi song from the film «Dil To Pagal Hai», eliciting laughter from the audience. Raut said Kamra hadn't named anyone in the satire song and questioned the need for the agitated reaction.

Shinde Sena's Sanjay Nirupam alleges Kunal Kamra show funded by Uddhav Thackeray
«The place where this show was recorded, the booking money for it came from Matoshree from Uddav Thackeray and that is why Eknath Shinde has been targeted,» Nirupam said during a press conference in Mumbai. «The people of Maharashtra have blessed the choice of Eknath Shinde, in that too, Kunal Kamra went forward with allegations because Sanjay Raut and Uddhav Thackeray has given him money,» he added. The leader further showed a photo of Sanjay Raut and Kunal Kamra at Habitat venue together. The photo is from a previous series of Kamra, called 'Ya Kunal,' where he interviewed UBT leader Sanjay Raut. Alleging that Kamra is part of the «Rahul Gandhi and Congress ecosystem,» he added, «He is a man of leftist ideology and a close friend of Sanjay Raut. First he walks with Rahul Gandhi in padyatra and his picture comes with Sanjay Raut, he also meets Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule. And now in the name of stand-up comedy, he has made a very low level comment on our supreme leader Eknath Shinde.»

India's business growth dipped in March due to weaker services demand, PMI shows
manufacturing expansion failed to offset a slowdown in the services sector, a private survey showed on Monday. HSBC's flash India Composite Purchasing Managers' Index, compiled by S&P Global, slipped to 58.6 in March from February's final reading of 58.8, lower than a Reuters poll's median prediction of 59.0. The 50-mark divides growth from contraction. The manufacturing PMI index increased to 57.6 from 56.3, remaining in the expansion territory for more than three-and-a-half years. But the dominant-services sector's PMI index fell to 57.7 from 59.0 in February, contributing to the fall in the overall index.
