As people get suspicious of governments, the value of sound macroeconomic policymaking should assert itself
Across much of the industrial world, trust in government is low and declining. Why is this happening and why exactly does it matter? An unusually thorough new study looks at these questions and finds answers that are somewhat unexpected and, in one way, more disturbing than you might have guessed. The fact of diminished trust is hardly a revelation, least of all in countries such as the US, where anti-establishment populists have turned politics upside down and elite expertise has become not just distrusted but disdained. Last year, a survey found that fewer than one is six Americans expect Washington to do the right thing “nearly always” (1%) or “most of the time” (15%).

Lesson from India’s aviation market failure: The Invisible Hand is theory but regulation is a must
Last week was yet another education in how fragile markets truly are. When one private airline faltered, schedules collapsed, weddings were disrupted, families struggled, students fought to reach exam venues and businesses scrambled. A logistical nightmare became a dark reminder of something even more profound: markets, especially concentrated ones, can turn predatory in a crisis unless they’re regulated well.Let us look at the symptoms.

Mint Quick Edit | Can any government really keep young teens off social media? All eyes are on Australia
A week before Australia’s social media ban for under-16s kicks in, Meta has started pushing underage Australians off its Instagram, Facebook and Threads platforms. The ban, which comes into effect on 10 December, is aimed at shielding children from harmful content. Social media being what it is, the rest of the world is watching what many consider a doomed experiment. Age-faking has been a common practice for the underage to gain access to platforms and many under-16s are aware of VPN and other hacks to get around digital walls.

Why AI can't take over creative writing
In 2022, 74 years after Shannon's proposal, ChatGPT appeared, which caught the attention of the public, with some even suggesting it was a gateway to super-human intelligence. Going from Shannon's proposal to ChatGPT took so long because the amount of data and computing time used was unimaginable even a few years before. ChatGPT is a large language model (LLM) learned from a huge corpus of text from the internet. It predicts the probability of the next word given the context: a prompt and the previously generated words.

Did Elon Musk just sell X to 'himself' to save Tesla? Viral parody video speculates a billion-dollar shell game
Elon Musk made headlines—again—by revealing that he had officially sold X (formerly Twitter) to his artificial intelligence company, xAI, in a deal valued at $45 billion. On paper, it sounded like an ambitious move to synergize AI development with social media infrastructure. But a viral satirical video on Instagram has turned the announcement into something else entirely: a puzzle that many now believe has less to do with tech vision and more with strategic financial maneuvering. The video, created by Instagram user @genericartdad, took a comical yet razor-sharp jab at Musk’s business shuffle. Using a back-and-forth dialogue format where he plays both interviewer and Musk, the creator humorously dismantled the deal by asking one simple question: Why would you sell Twitter to yourself?

Want to beat China or US? Start with 90-hour work weeks: Harsh Goenka backs Narayana Murthy work week debate
RPG Group Chairman Harsh Goenka has stepped into the ongoing conversation around India’s startup culture and work ethic, aligning himself with two high-profile voices—Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Infosys founder N.R. Narayana Murthy. Goenka’s remarks, made via social media on 5 April, came in the wake of criticism directed at Goyal for questioning the direction of India’s startup ecosystem. The minister recently stirred a storm with his comments at the Startup Mahakumbh 2025. “When Murthy and Subrahmanyan spoke of 70-90 hour work weeks, and Piyush Goyal questioned startups making vegan ice creams and chasing 10-minute deliveries, they weren’t being literal—they were being directional. They were asking: what are we really building?” Goenka posted on X.
