Digital Platform show country social Schools rights The more time kids spend on phones, the worse their mental health... but bans in schools alone won’t help: Expert
The first, written by a broad team of authors and published in The Lancet, investigates the impact of mobile phone policies in schools on students’ mental health, academic performance, physical activity and sleep, drawing on data from over 1,200 adolescents aged 12–15 years across the UK. The second article, written by six authors in The British Medical Journal, focuses on strategies to support the development of healthy technology use among young people. Apoorva Mittal spoke to Goodyear on Zoom about the findings and their implications in a world where digital devices are deeply woven into the lives of young people, and at a time when Australia has introduced a law banning social media for minors and shows like Netflix’s Adolescence are highlighting the negative impacts of these platforms on young adults. Edited excerpts: What inspired you to undertake the study on phone use in schools and its impact on adolescents? When we started the study, we were seeing growing concerns about adolescent mental health—especially around increased anxiety and lower well-being. At the same time, there was a noticeable rise in smartphone ownership and social media use among teenagers. Many discussions were linking the two, but the evidence was inconsistent. Meanwhile, several countries were starting to consider or implement school phone bans or delay smartphone access for adolescents. We wanted to look at whether these bans were making a difference. What have you observed on the use of technology by adolescents? Adolescents use phones for all sorts of things—accessing information, playing games, staying connected with friends. But they are also spending a lot of time on these platforms throughout the day.

Is Trump actually playing a strategic ‘chess’ game—and are we all just pawns? On April 2, Trump unveiled sweeping new tariffs on foreign imports, calling the day “Liberation Day” for American industry. The move includes a 25% tariff on all foreign-made cars and a baseline 10% tariff on imports from every country not part of the USMCA trade deal—leaving the EU, UK, and others scrambling to respond. China, of course, fired back with a 34% tariff on U.S. goods. But as the political fallout begins to swirl, a viral social media theory is giving the chaos a dramatic twist.

UPS security economy Election Bill social Senate GOP approves framework for Trump's tax breaks and spending cuts after all-night session
Senate Republicans plugged away overnight and into early Saturday morning to approve their multitrillion-dollar tax breaks and spending cuts framework, hurling past a hard line of Democratic opposition toward what President Donald Trump calls the «big, beautiful bill» that's central to his agenda. The vote, 51-48, fell along mostly party lines. It could not have come at a more difficult political moment. The U.S. economy is churning after Trump's vast tariff scheme sent stocks plummeting, and experts are warning of soaring costs for consumers at home and threats of a potential recession. Even some Republicans have expressed concerns. But with a nod from Trump GOP leaders held determined to march ahead. Approval paves the way for Republicans, in the months ahead, to try to power a tax cut bill through both chambers of Congress over the objections of Democrats, just as they did in Trump's first term with unified party control in Washington. «Let the voting begin,» Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said Friday night. The evening kicked off what's called vote-a-rama as Democrats were intent on making the effort as politically painful as possible, with votes on some two dozen amendments to the package that GOP senators will have to defend before next year's midterm elections.

Strategy Trade country social reports Tariffs stir talks: India, Vietnam and Israel hustle for deals with team Trump
These negotiations come just days after the US imposed a series of new tariffs affecting several nations, including a levy of 26% on India. According to Reuters, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the levies with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. A State Department readout of their meeting confirmed that the tariff discussions are part of a broader diplomatic effort. The talks are centered on a relatively small subset of the countries impacted by the new tariffs, with both parties looking to strike deals. This is seen as the first phase of a larger set of negotiations, as countries begin to assess their next steps and responses to the tariff changes. On Friday, Vietnam, which is facing a 46% tariff on its exports to the US, announced that it intends to reduce its tariffs on US goods to zero, pending an agreement with the US.

Warren Buffett wants the world to know: he’s not cheering Donald Trump’s tariff spree. And he hasn’t said a word about it—despite what viral videos and presidential posts might suggest. Berkshire Hathaway issued a rare public statement on Friday, flatly denying that Buffett ever praised Trump’s recent economic measures. “There are reports currently circulating on social media (including Twitter, Facebook and TikTok) regarding comments allegedly made by Warren E. Buffett. All such reports are false,” the company said. The clarification came hours after US President Donald Trump shared a video on Truth Social claiming Buffett had declared Trump was making “the best economic moves he’s seen in over 50 years.” The video, originally posted by an Instagram user called «AmericanPapaBear,» suggested Trump was “crashing” the stock market on purpose to make equities cheaper for the middle class. Trump’s repost came just as global markets were convulsing in response to his new tariffs.
