The involved lorry, suspected to be a waste collection vehicle, remained at the site, with the driver cooperating with the ongoing police investigation, reports said. As of now, no arrests have been made, and inquiries continue.

These would be higher than basic minimum wages. “We could go beyond minimum wages in a year,” a senior government official told ET. The ILO had agreed on the reform at its 350th governing body meeting in Geneva that concluded on March 14. There are over 500 million workers in India and 90% of them are in the unorganised sector where many draw a daily minimum wage of `176 or more, depending on the state where they work. However, this national wage floor — not revised since 2017 — is not binding on states and hence a few states pay even less than that.

Around 8.08 lakh members were enrolled for the first time in January 2024, a labour ministry statement said on Sunday. The Employees'' Provident Fund Organization's (EPFO) provisional payroll highlighted that the EPFO has added 16.02 lakh members on a net basis in January 2024, the ministry said. A noticeable aspect of the data is the dominance of the 18-25 age group, constituting a significant 56.41 per cent of the total new members added in January 2024 indicating the majority of individuals joining the organized workforce are youth, primarily first-time job seekers.

Election Commission, accusing BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari of violating the model code of conduct by spreading false news and maligning senior police officers of West Bengal. Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal assembly, on Saturday wrote to the EC claiming that there are several non-IPS officers in West Bengal holding positions designated only for IPS officers, including that of superintendents of police (SPs). In a post on X, he urged the ECI to look into the list of 16 police officers he shared, claiming they are non-IPS officers but occupy positions designated for IPS officers. Reacting to Adhikari's claims, the ruling TMC said in a letter to the EC, labelled his accusation as «false, fake and baseless because all the names of the officials appearing in the published list are those of high ranking officials who are a part of the IPS cadres under Indian Police Service (Cadre Rules) 1954.»
