Australia's world-first social media ban for children under 16 attracts mixed reaction
Australia approved the social media ban for children late on Thursday after an emotive debate that has gripped the nation, setting a benchmark for jurisdictions around the world with one of the toughest regulations targeting big tech. The law forces tech giants from Instagram and Facebook owner Meta Platforms to TikTok to stop minors from logging in or face fines of up to A$49.5 million ($32 million). A trial of enforcement methods will start in January, with the ban to take effect in a year.

Australia has barred everyone under 16 from social media. Will it work?
Australia has imposed a sweeping ban on social media for children under 16, one of the world's most comprehensive measures aimed at safeguarding young people from potential hazards online. But many details were still unclear, such as how it will be enforced and what platforms will be covered. After sailing through Parliament's lower house on Wednesday, the bill passed the Senate on Thursday with bipartisan support. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said that it puts Australia at the vanguard of efforts to protect the mental health and well-being of children from the detrimental effects of social media, such as online hate or bullying. The law, he has said, puts the onus on social media platforms to take «reasonable steps» to prevent anyone under 16 from having an account. Corporations could be fined up to 49.5 million Australian dollars (about $32 million) for «systemic» failures to implement age requirements.

RCB's IPL captaincy remains uncertain, but Ab de Villiers drops a major hint on potential captain
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) announced their 22-player squad for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) following this week's auction. However, the team's captaincy remains undecided. While there's no official announcement, speculation points towards Virat Kohli, RCB's former long-term captain, returning to the leadership role. Kohli stepped down after the 2021 season. Former RCB player AB de Villiers hinted at Kohli's potential return on his YouTube channel. “I don't think it has been confirmed yet, but he will be the captain, I think, looking at the squad,” de Villiers said. Other potential captaincy candidates within the squad include Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Krunal Pandya. Kumar has served as interim captain for Sunrisers Hyderabad, while Pandya captains Baroda in domestic cricket. Neither has led a full IPL season.

JDU gets to work early for 2025 assembly polls
Belaganj assembly by-election in Bihar, the JDU has started early preparations for the assembly polls next year. Besides the JDU, the BJP won two seats and Hindustani Awam Morcha retained one seat, making it a clean sweep for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). All four seats fall in the Magadh-Shahabad belt of Bihar where the NDA had not been able to perform well since the 2020 assembly election. Earlier Janata Dal and since 1990, the RJD had been winning the Belaganj seat. JDU candidate Manorma Devi's victory in the by-election marked the first time in 34 years that a party other than the RJD won the seat. «This victory is significant as we have defeated RJD in their stronghold and have gained ground in Magadh and Shahabad region. The vote transfer among the NDA allies has been smooth and it has solidified in people's minds ahead of the assembly polls,» JDU general secretary and state minister Ashok Choudhary told ET.

The escalation came a day after Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah began a ceasefire in Lebanon, halting more than a year of hostilities and raising hopes among many Palestinians in Gaza for a similar deal with Hamas, which rules the enclave. Israel's military campaign — with the avowed intent of eradicating Hamas militants after the group's deadly raid on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023 — has laid waste to the enclave of 2.3 million people.

Edible oil prices likely to drop 9% by mid-December
edible oil prices set to fall, after a gap of four months, from mid-December by up to 9% following a drop in international prices of soybean, sunflower and palm oil by $100 dollars per tonne in the last fortnight. Abundant global production of soybean has pushed down prices of soybean oil. Sunflower oil prices are also cooling off while palm oil prices have fallen since Indonesia, the world's biggest palm oil producer, is yet to frame its biodiesel policy. Indonesia produces biodiesel from a blend of palm oil and fossil fuel-based diesel. The country currently uses 35% palm oil in biodiesel, which the government was planning to raise to 40%, a move opposed by environmentalists. This has forced the Indonesian government to rethink the issue.

How Musk-Trump will take on tech
However, the relationship between the tech industry and Trump 2.0 will be shaped by three factors: 1) deregulation 2) antitrust policy 3) possible confrontation with China. This dynamic could fundamentally reshape the tech sector domestically in the US and globally. The cornerstone of Trump's tech policy is likely to be aggressive deregulation. In contrast to the Biden administration's oversight approach, particularly regarding AI and data privacy, Trump has consistently advocated for reducing regulatory barriers. This deregulatory stance could give tech companies greater freedom to innovate and expand their operations with less government oversight, an arena where Musk has skin in the game.
