Research students Universities track Schools rights Researchers in limbo as Columbia bows to Trump's demands in bid to restore $400M federal funding cut
Columbia University over its handling of student protests against Israel's war in Gaza, much of the financial pain fell on researchers a train ride away from the school's campus, working on things like curing cancer and studying COVID-19's impact on children. The urgency of salvaging ongoing research projects at the university's labs and world-renowned medical center was one factor in Columbia's decision last week to bow to the Republican administration's unprecedented demands for changes in university policy as a condition of getting funding restored. The Ivy League university announced Friday that it would overhaul its student disciplinary process, ban protesters from wearing masks, bar demonstrations from academic buildings, adopt a new definition of antisemitism and put its Middle Eastern studies program under the supervision of a vice provost who would have a say over curriculum and hiring. The university's decision to accede to nearly all of the Trump administration's demands outraged some faculty members, who say Columbia has sacrificed academic freedom. The American Association of University Professors and the American Federation of Teachers, representing members of Columbia's faculty, filed a lawsuit Tuesday saying the funding revocation violated free speech laws. Scientific and medical researchers are appalled that their work was drawn into the debate to begin with.

A key leader of NCP, which was floated last month with widely assumed blessings of Professor Muhammad Yunus, accused the military of «political interference» over a proposal for inclusiveness that would allow Awami League to participate in the next elections. «Those who are supposed to discharge their work inside cantonment, should stay there... in the 'post-revolution Bangladesh' no interference in the political landscape from the cantonment will be accepted,» said Hasnat Abdullah in a press briefing at the NCP office. US State Department's decision to freeze funding for Fulbright and other scholarships has left thousands of Indian students in limbo, stripping them of an opportunity that once changed lives, said study abroad consultants. It was an opportunity she could only dream of till then. More than just academic exposure, it reshaped her introvert personality. Mudgil, head of marketing at food startup Conosh, now moves effortlessly in elite culinary circles, rubbing shoulders with celebrity and Michelin-starred chefs. «A hundred percent of that transformation came from the exposure Fulbright gave me,» she said.

UPS Target Election students Universities rowing Tamil Nadu delimitation meet done with eye on '26 polls as DMK lacks achievements to highlight: Sitharaman
DMK was raising «emotional» issues like alleged Hindi imposition and Parliament delimitation as it had nothing to showcase as its own achievements before people during next year's Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. Slamming the state's law and order situation, she said there was «lawlessness.» Sitharaman targeted the ruling party over the Anna University woman student sexual assault case. «What happened to that woman? Is the accused your party worker or not? Till date, what is the answer for the Kallakurichi incident,» she asked about the 2024 hooch tragedy that killed many persons. She questioned the DMK as to what has its government achieved 'distinctly' due to its efforts and wondered if it can mention any welfare measures brought to Tamil Nadu. «Nothing,» she said. «So take up emotional issues to hide your inability, corruption...at least these are old issues, now TASMAC (irregularities) has come up. Just like how scams used to come out daily during Manmohan Singh (UPA) government, of which DMK was a part. Such tales are happening,» in the current dispensation in TN, she told a media interaction.
