DoT drops penalty clause; exempts demonstration, testing by central govt from new interception rule
Department of Telecom has dropped the penalty clause on telecom entities for violation of interception norms under the new rules notified recently. The Telecommunications (Procedures and Safeguards for Lawful Interception of Messages) Rules, 2024, notified on Wednesday, will not be applicable to demonstrations and testing of interception systems by the central government. Under the new interception rules, the DoT has removed provisions related to fines and suspension of telecom licences for violation of licence conditions pertaining to maintenance of secrecy, confidentiality of information and unauthorised interception of communications. The new rules, however, mandate telecom entities involved in the process of interception to ensure that «adequate and effective internal safeguards are implemented to prevent any unauthorised interception of messages» and «confidentiality and secrecy is maintained in the matter of interception of messages».

US Elections: Kamala Harris, Tim Walz will sit down for first major television interview of their presidential campaign
Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, will sit down Thursday for their first major television interview of their presidential campaign as the duo travels in southeast Georgia on a bus tour. The interview with CNN's Dana Bash will give Harris a chance to quell criticism that she has eschewed uncontrolled environments, while also giving her a fresh platform to define her campaign and test her political mettle ahead of an upcoming debate with former President Donald Trump set for September 10. But it also carries risk as her team tries to build on momentum from the ticket shakeup following Joe Biden's exit and last week's Democratic National Convention. Joint interviews during an election year are a fixture in politics; Biden and Harris, Trump and Mike Pence, Barack Obama and Biden — all did them at a similar point in the race. The difference is those other candidates had all done solo interviews, too. Harris hasn't yet done an in-depth interview since she became her party's standard bearer five weeks ago, though she did sit for several while she was still Biden's running mate.

Ayurvedic medicines mustn’t get a free pass on advertising
The outbreak of covid in 2020 sparked a global war against a deadly new virus. Away from the spotlight, it also triggered a grand domestic battle between advocates of allopathy and Ayurveda. The trigger was Patanjali Ayurved’s quick launch of Coronil, a purported ‘cure for corona’ that drew public attention to dodgy claims and protests from allopathic doctors.

Puja Khedkar controversy fallout: UPSC to perform Aadhaar-based authentication for candidates' verifications
UPSC) to perform Aadhaar-based authentication to verify candidates' identity on a voluntary basis, both at the time of registration and during various stages of examinations and recruitment. The move assumes significance as the commission last month cancelled the provisional candidature of probationary IAS officer Puja Khedkar and debarred her from all future examinations for fraudulently availing attempts in the civil services examination beyond eligibility. Khedkar has also been accused of misusing disability and Other Backward Classes or OBC (non-creamy layer) quotas, among others. In a notification, the personnel ministry said the UPSC «is allowed to perform Aadhaar authentication, on voluntary basis, for verification of identity of candidates at the time of registration on 'One Time Registration' portal and various stages of examination/recruitment test, using Yes/No or/and e-KYC authentication facility».

Kangana Ranaut also had her share of accidents and narrow misses while learning how to drive. In a recent media interaction, the actress-politician revealed that she hit an autorickshaw during her first attempt to earn a driver’s license. She also admitted that it was her peer Deepika Padukone who inspired her to obtain a license. In an interview withMashable India, the ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ star said that the sight of Padukone driving her SUV effortlessly was what eventually inspired her to take her driving lessons seriously. “I’ve tried learning to drive so many times, but both times I went for my driving test, I ended up hitting something. Deepika Padukone and I entered Bollywood around the same time—her debut was in 2007, and mine was in 2006. We were even in the same driving school back then, both living in Bandra at the time,” she revealed.

Who was the surprise guest at the DNC 2024? It turns out to be Covid-19; here's why
Perhaps at the Democratic National Convention, there was an unexpected guest. Following several convention attendees' positive COVID-19 respiratory illness tests last week in Chicago, health officials are worried about a spike in infections. People also disclosed their diagnoses on social media. Several online users who voiced concerns regarding the possible COVID-19 outbreak during the conference had social media profile pictures of themselves wearing masks. The extent of the virus's spread during the four-day party event in Chicago last week is currently unknown. For the convention, tens of thousands of people gathered in the Windy City. The United Center, the location of the major speeches, can hold roughly 20,000 people, although a precise head count was not immediately available, as quoted in a report by The New York Post.
