Dinesh Kumar Khara, Chairman, SBI, says “I am quite confident that with the kind of plough back which we have, we will be in a position to generate adequate plough back to take care of this increased capital requirements which have been prescribed by RBI. We are very closely watching whatever is the situation and we will be ensuring that the bank should be very well capitalised. It is already well capitalised, but it should stay well capitalised and meet all the regulatory requirements because RBI prescription is one, our board prescription is invariably over and above that.” Should we start with new year resolutions? Dinesh Kumar Khara: Yes, new year resolution is to continue to improve upon where we left the year 2023.

Why you shouldn't over-diversify your investment portfolio
Priya is a committed investor, who has put together a diverse pool of investments over time. She is confident about her product selection, having mitigated risk by spreading her investments across numerous products, with small amounts. Despite her strategic approach, Priya realises that her portfolio isn’t delivering substantial returns and lacks protection from market volatility. Additionally, accessing funds when needed proves challenging, and managing the portfolio becomes a time-consuming task. Priya is left wondering where she has gone wrong and how to realign her investments. Priya’s portfolio exhibits signs of over-diversification, a condition characterised by numerous, small, fragmented holdings that reduce the impact of successful investing.

If You Buy the Dogs, Should You Sell These Dow Leaders?
The Dogs of the Dow is a popular strategy getting much attention now that the year-end is here. The theory assumes that this year’s losers will be next year’s winners, which is often true. Dow Dogs offers value and above-average yield, with Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) being a primary example. Walgreens is 2023’s worst-performing Dow stock, down 30% YOY but now trading at a deep value while paying more than 7% in yield. The value and yield alone are an attractive force, add in the new CEO, a potential sale of Boots and the outlook for turnaround, and it’s a viable if speculative investment for income seekers.

When FMCG giants pushed on with a cartful of troubles
FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) companies have a lot going for them: rising disposable incomes, rapid pace of urbanisation, growing aspirations and lower penetration of branded products. However, despite a vast growth opportunity, the FMCG companies struggled with various challenges in 2023 and hope to have a better 2024. Weaker-than-expected festive demand, rainfall deficit that hampered rural growth, unseasonal rains that dampened sale of beverages and higher commodity prices constituted a daunting landscape for India's FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) companies in 2023. When inflation was at a record high, the FMCG industry had a high price-led growth in the last five-six quarters, though the volume was under stress. However, the trend has started reversing with the cooling of commodity prices. While volume growth for the FMCG industry in urban India has been on a positive trajectory since April-June last year, rural markets have grown marginally this calendar year, according to market researcher NielsenIQ. In the September quarter, urban markets grew 10.2% year-on-year while rural grew 6.4%, it said. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, rural markets were driving overall growth, growing twice as fast as urban markets. But the demand has slowed down in the current quarter. Overall sales of apparel and electronic products have been languishing for over a year now, while those of mass-segment electronic products have been low since the pandemic outbreak. According to researcher GfK, there was a slight pick-up in mass segment during Diwali. Below are some of the challenges faced by the FMCG companies that attracted attention in 2023:

India emerged as a leader in IPOs in 2023: Report
index touched a 33-year high, Hong Kong rounded out its fourth straight year of decline and India emerged as a leader in IPOs, Nikkei reported. One of the biggest drivers behind this divergence was disappointment in China's post-Covid recovery. Hong Kong's flagship Hang Seng Index (HSI), which tracks 80 blue chip stocks, has dropped 13.8 per cent this year, its first four-year losing streak since its launch in 1969, Nikkei reported. As investors shift away from greater China, their attention is moving to Japan, India and the tech hubs of Taiwan and South Korea. The major indexes in these markets rose by more than double digits in 2023, with Japan's Nikkei 225 leading the pack at nearly 30 per cent, Nikkei reported. The comeback of Japanese shares was a result of multiple factors, including improved corporate governance, something the country's regulators have been working on for over a decade in hopes of stimulating investment from abroad. BlackRock this month reaffirmed its «overweight» position on Japanese equities for the next six to 12 months.

We inhabit the same planet, and yet each country is mired in its own gook, whether it's the news cycle, the arts, festivals, religion, politics, or sport.
