Nevermind those EVs — oil demand keeps growing
oil demand heading into the northern hemisphere summer holiday. Nervousness about the seasonal pickup in oil consumption abounds. It happened in 2023, and it’s happening again this year. But as before, traders’ concerns are misplaced: Oil demand growth is doing just fine. The anxiety is reflected in the price of Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, which has dropped to less than $85 a barrel in recent days, down from about $90 a barrel in April. With the OPEC+ oil cartel meeting on June 1 to decide whether to prolong production cuts, the status of global demand matters. The group should look beyond the current noise and see that consumption remains firm. Admittedly, there are pockets of demand weakness. The middle distillates fuel segment, which includes diesel and heating oil, have seen soft consumption so far this year. But that’s largely due to a warm winter in the northern hemisphere, which reduced heating needs, rather than underlying economic malaise. In the diesel market, the biggest problem isn’t demand, but supply: Renewable diesel and bio-diesel are taking market share more rapidly than expected, in the process magnifying the diesel glut. In February, the last month with monthly data available, biodiesel and renewable diesel accounted for about 8.5% of total US diesel consumption. In 2020, the market share of both was under 1%.

India signs deal with Iran to run Chabahar port
India and Iran signed a 10-year contract on Monday for the management of Chabahar port, putting the seal on what’s envisaged as a gamechanger in regional connectivity, rivalling China’s Belt and Road Initiative and being an alternative to Gwadar port in Pakistan. Shipping minister Sarbananda Sonowal travelled to Tehran for the signing of the new 10-year contract between India Ports Global Ltd (IPGL) and Ports & Maritime Organisation of Iran (PMO). ET was the first to report on the new Chabahar contract in its May 13 edition. Under the contract, IPGL will equip and operate the port for the duration of the contract. At the end of the 10-year period, both sides will extend their cooperation in Chabahar. IPGL will invest about $120 million in equipping the port, officials said. India has also offered a rupee credit window equivalent to $250 million for mutually identified projects aimed at improving Chabahar-related infrastructure, they said.

Did you make your connecting flight? You may have AI to thank
United Airlines flight to London was ready to depart, but it was still waiting for 13 passengers connecting from Costa Rica. The airline projected they'd miss the flight by seven minutes. Under normal circumstances, they'd all be scrambling to rebook. But thanks to a new artificial-intelligence-powered tool called ConnectionSaver, the jet was able to wait for them — their checked bags, too — and still arrive in London on time. The system also sent text messages to the late-arriving passengers and the people on the waiting jet to explain what was happening. AI still might not be able to find space for your carry-on, but it could help put an end to the 40-gate dash — sprinting to catch your connecting flight before the door slams shut — as well as other common travel headaches.

Aurora again: Spectacular celestial shows expected shortly as CMEs hit Earth | See pics
Mother's Day auroras? Northern lights show may continue tonight The expulsions of plasma and magnetic fields from the Sun, known as CMEs are expected to reach Earth late Sunday or early Monday, "causing severe or extreme geomagnetic storms once again," said Keith Ryden, who heads the Surrey Space Centre in England to AFP news agency. But scientists said the intensity of anything seen Sunday night might not reach the level of Friday's show. Why do we get auroras on Earth after eruptions occur on Sun? NASA says THIS Friday saw the first "extreme" geomagnetic storm since October 2003 that caused blackouts in Sweden and damaged power infrastructure in South Africa.
