Brazil calls UN Security Council meeting on Israel-Hamas war
Hamas, its foreign affairs ministry said Wednesday. Brazilian Foreign Affairs Minister Mauro Vieira has interrupted an Asia trip to travel 'to New York to participate in a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, called by Brazil… to address the situation in the Gaza Strip,' the Ministry said in a statement. Brazil previously called an emergency meeting of the Security Council on Sunday, the day after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel. Israeli forces say 1,200 people, most of them civilians, were killed in the onslaught, the worst in the country's history. As Israel pounded Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, a densely populated enclave of 2.3 million people, in response, the death toll there has also reached 1,200 people, including a high number of civilians, according to Palestinian authorities. More than 3,38,000 people in the enclave have been displaced, according to the United Nations. At Sunday's Security Council meeting, members were divided over policy concerning Israel and the Palestinians. Earlier on Wednesday, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called for urgent international action to protect both Palestinian and Israeli civilians, especially children. «Children must never be held hostage, anywhere in the world,» Lula wrote on social media platform X. «Hamas needs to free the Israeli children who were kidnapped from their families.

Israel war: Joe Biden says he has seen photos of Hamas terrorists beheading children
Israel, US President Joe Biden on Wednesday addressed Jewish community leaders at a roundtable in the White House and called the attacks by Hamas a «campaign of pure cruelty». «I never really thought that I would see and have confirmed pictures of terrorists beheading children,» Biden said in broader remarks about his administration's support for Israel amid its war with Hamas and efforts to free American hostages. During the event at the White House, featuring a group of around two dozen rabbis and leaders of Jewish organisations, Biden also warned Iran to «be careful». «We moved the US carrier fleet to the eastern Mediterranean and we are sending more fighter jets to that region, and made it clear to the Iranians: Be careful,» he said, adding, «When terrorist groups like Hamas, brought not only a sheer evil, sheer evil to the world, evil that echoes the worst matches in some cases exceeds the worst atrocities of ISIS.» Earlier on Wednesday, the US president spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyhu, marking the fourth known call between the two.

Vladimir Putin to travel to Kyrgyzstan in first known trip abroad since ICC arrest warrant
Vladimir Putin will visit Kyrgyzstan on Thursday, the presidential office of the Central Asian country said, in what would be the Russian leader's first known trip abroad since the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for his arrest. Putin has rarely travelled abroad since the start of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in early 2022 and is not known to have left Russia since the ICC issued in March a warrant for him on suspicion of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine. The Kremlin denies those allegations. «At the invitation of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sadyr Japarov, on October 12 of this year, the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, will make an official visit to the country,» the Kyrgyz presidential administration said in a statement on its website. Putin agreed in May during talks with Japarov to visit Kyrgyzstan, but there has been no official confirmation yet from the Kremlin that the Russian president will travel there on Thursday. The Russian leader is also due to travel to China next week for the third Belt and Road Forum in Beijing.
