Will China become the cat among India's EV pigeons?
Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) have sent a scare in the US and Europe. Many have predicted doomsday scenarios. The Alliance for American Manufacturing has said that government subsidized Chinese EVs “could end up being an extinction-level event for the U.S. auto sector". Earlier this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk told industry analysts Chinese EVs are so good that without trade barriers, “they will pretty much demolish most other car companies in the world.” The US has decided to shield itself from the Chinese EV onslaught. President Joe Biden has announced a series of new and increased tariffs on several Chinese-made goods. He quadrupled the tariff on electric vehicles made in China from 25% to 100%. Chinese lithium-ion batteries for electric cars will now face a 25% tariff, up from 7.5%. Since many European car makers manufacture in China and sell in Europe, they are appealing against similar tariffs on Chinese EVs. That's why the Delhi-based product designer and founder of brand Ikkis ensured her homeware collection presented at the Milan Design Week last month was "anti-ethnic". The range of 21 glasses, cups and plates—all displayed in a room that looked like an organised kirana store (curation was done by Maria Cristina Didero, curatorial director of Miami Design Week)—can be best described as elevated everyday items that highlight Indian craftsmanship in a simple, yet sophisticated form.

Nitish Kumar had also promised the same when he was part of the Opposition INDIA bloc. At an election rally in Bihar, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while reiterating the 'vote bank' jibe, said, "PM Modi has built the temple of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya. Now, the work that is left is to build a great memorial at the birthplace of Ma Sita." "Those who kept themselves away from Ram temple can't do this, but if someone can build a temple as ideal as the life of Ma Sita, it's Narendra Modi, it's BJP," the minister was quoted by ANI as saying at a rally in Bihar's Sitamarhi.

NCBC wants West Bengal, Punjab to raise OBC reservations as quota limit remains unused
National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) has reportedly asked the West Bengal and Punjab govts to raise the share of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in reservations as the two states are still not fully using the 50% reservation limit. In West Bengal, the total reservation for SCs/STs and OBCs for govt employment and education is 45% while in Punjab the same is at 37% and 35% respectively, NCBC noted. The commission, as per the report in the Times of India, thus recommended that the two opposition ruled states to enhance without delay the quota for OBCs to make full use of the limit permitted under the Supreme Court-mandated 50% cap. NCBC has recommended the West Bengal govt to increase the quota for OBCs by 5% in government employment and educational institutions. For Punjab, the commission suggested an increase of 13% in government employment and 15% in education.
