Rising heatwave could set AC costs of telecom towers soaring
air-conditioning costs at telecom tower installations, crucial for ensuring uninterrupted operations of base stations for 24x7 mobile connectivity, industry executives and analysts said. They added that power and fuel costs of telecom operators could potentially rise if heatwave conditions persist for the next one month as any change in energy costs is typically passed on to telcos by tower companies. Industry experts cautioned the current scenario could also lead to a slowdown in tower network expansions in the near term, even though Indian tower companies are used to working in hot weather conditions.

Citroen bets on 'Basalt' to boost India play
Citroen, which has had limited success with the models launched in India so far, is hoping to turn around its fortunes in the country with the Basalt — a mid-size coupe SUV that would go on sale in the second half of this year. The latest offering from the Stellantis group firm captures the learnings it has had in a market it considers the toughest in the world, said Thierry Koskas, global brand CEO of Citroen. «If you succeed in India, it means you can succeed everywhere in the world,» Koskas told ET. «I have been visiting India for 20 years and I am impressed by the rise of customer expectation in terms of features. The expectations of the customer are even higher than what you can see, for example, in Europe,» he said.

PSBs plan to set up 'green cells' for climate funding
green cells' with dedicated employees for climate-specific initiatives. These measures are part of the Enhanced Access and Service Excellence (EASE) reform version 7.0, which was rolled out last week. A senior bank executive said that one of the major focus areas of PSBs in FY25 will be developing capabilities for raising green funds and increasing their green lending portfolios. «Banks will set up specialised cells that will also focus on physical and transition risk in the existing loan portfolio and new loan opportunities,» he said, adding that other responsibilities include assessment of the environmental, social and governance (ESG)-related risks of borrowers through data. According to a report by the Reserve Bank of India, the country's green financing requirement is estimated to be at least 2.5% of GDP annually until 2030. Earlier this year, the banking regulator came out with draft guidelines on the disclosure framework for climate-related financial risks in 2024. The draft also proposes a glide path for detailed disclosures by regulated entities (REs) in the areas of governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics and targets.

Airbnb saw a 30% increase in nights booked in India in 2023 from the year before, surpassing its global average growth rate. Blecharczyk said in an interview that the company has observed “significant interest” in various destinations across the country, and to support this trend, it has collaborated “closely” with the government to promote local tourism and highlight the rich cultural heritage and diverse accommodation options available. “In India, more than 86% of bookings on Airbnb are group trips, which is why we’re introducing new features to help make planning trips with friends and family easier,” he said.

Why India needs to give more power to its regulators
The way the pot can't call the kettle black, hardly any product seller or service provider can take the 'holier than thou' stance against others. The Supreme Court's rebuke to the Indian Medical Association (IMA) during the Patanjali misleading advertising case hearing, asking it to also put its house in order, given the complaints of unethical conduct by allopathic doctors, is an instance in point here. Lack of effective regulations and their poor implementation is one of the major reasons for consumers' disempowerment over the years. Regular instances of product contamination, deficiency in services and involuntary product recalls or bans ordered by other countries point to the lack of regulatory deterrence among Indian businesses.

Naveen Patnaik will never accept Bharat Ratna for father in return for alliance: V K Pandian
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will never accept Bharat Ratna or any other award for his father Biju Patnaik in return for any election or political alliance with the BJP, his close associate and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader V K Pandian has said. The former IAS officer, who has worked in Odisha for over 25 years, including as private secretary to the chief minister, also hit out at the central ministers from the state for having never spoken about the highest civilian award for the 'Pride of Odisha' and inspiration for every Odiya, Biju Patnaik. «One of the biggest identities for Odisha is the courage and valour shown by Biju Babu. If you see two Odiyas in any part of the world if they speak about Odisha, they will end up speaking about Biju Babu,» Pandian told PTI in an interview here. «They will either have tears or they will have emotions. That is the connect Biju Patnaik has with the people of Odisha. He was a freedom fighter, he has done so much for the country and the state. He is the architect of modern Odisha,» he added.
