markets UPS Strategy economy Trade Charting the global economy: French government topples
Marine Le Pen teamed up with a left-wing coalition to topple the French government, pitching the country into a prolonged period of turbulence that’s likely to further unsettle investors. A majority of lawmakers in the National Assembly backed a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Michel Barnier’s three-month-old administration following a dispute over next year’s budget. It was the shortest tenure for a premier since France’s Fifth Republic was founded in 1958. In the US, job growth picked up in November, a month after employment was constrained by two hurricanes and a commercial aircraft machinists’ strike. The unemployment rate, however, rose as long-term joblessness reached an almost three-year high.

China's military activities come amid speculation Beijing might organise military drills around the island in response to Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te's recent visit to Pacific allies, including US stops in Hawaii and Guam. China claims Taiwan, a self-ruled democracy of 23 million people, as its own territory, and bristles at other countries' formal exchanges with Taiwan. The United States, like most countries, doesn't recognize Taiwan as a country but is its main unofficial backer and sells it arms.

NASA’s goal is to create «Class III» structures, which means buildings fully constructed using materials sourced from the Moon itself. This approach would save both time and costs compared to transporting materials from Earth. The process involves harvesting lunar regolith (Moon rock) using mining robots, which would then be 3D printed into whatever structures are needed, such as homes, roads, and launch pads. day-night Test seemed like an exciting idea, the panacea for the problem. Over the years, it seems to have lost its sheen. Except Australia, no country plays it regularly. In fact, they have hosted 13 out of 23 pink ball Tests that have been played so far. England and South Africa haven’t hosted a pink ball Test since 2017. Sri Lanka have never hosted one. India haven’t played a pink Test at home since March 2022 and there is nothing to suggest that it will change anytime soon. For all practical purposes, it has been reduced to tokenism championed by Australia whenever a touring side travels down under.

Viswanathan Anand was invited to address a gathering in Bengaluru. The attendees were not chess players or coaches or sports administrators. In fact, it had nothing to do with the sport of chess. Yet, it would turn out to be a gamechanger for chess in India. WestBridge Capital, the Bengaluru-based investment firm that had invited Anand, wanted him to talk to their investors about pattern recognition and its applicability in chess and business. It’s safe to assume that those investors went home better-informed, but chess was definitely the biggest benefactor. During a conversation, Sandeep Singhal, the cofounder and managing partner of WestBridge Captial, suggested to Anand that they should “do something together… for Indian chess”.“He said, ‘let’s think about it’ and then a few months later he came back with an idea of setting up an elite fellowship, where we take the sort of brightest young individuals and try to help them with that last bit that can be the gap between someone who’s best in India to someone who’s best in the world,” Singhal says.

markets UPS Citi War country International Alone and broke against a renewed insurgency, is Assad's rule about to collapse?
Bashar Assad was in serious trouble was 10 years ago, at the height of the country's civil war, when his forces lost control over parts of the largest city, Aleppo, and his opponents were closing in on the capital, Damascus. Back then, he was rescued by his chief international backer, Russia, and longtime regional ally Iran, which along with Lebanon's powerful Hezbollah militia helped Assad's forces retake Aleppo, tipping the war firmly in his favor. Now, as insurgents pursue a shock offensive that quickly captured not just Aleppo, but other key cities across the country's northwest and in the south, reaching the suburbs of the capital Damascus, the Syrian leader appears to be largely on his own.

Mamata Banerjee’s recent remarks regarding her role in the opposition INDIA alliance have sparked a flurry of reactions from allies within the bloc. Speaking on a television channel, the West Bengal Chief Minister expressed frustration over the leadership and coordination of the coalition. “I had formed the INDIA bloc, now it is up to those leading the front to manage it. If they can’t run the show, what can I do? I would just say that everyone needs to be taken along,” Banerjee stated. When asked why she had not taken charge of the alliance herself, Banerjee clarified, “If given the opportunity I would ensure its smooth functioning. I don’t want to go outside West Bengal, but I can run it from here.” This statement quickly led to speculation about Banerjee’s potential leadership of the INDIA bloc, which she helped establish to challenge the dominance of the BJP.

markets COST UPS economy Sustainability show reports Why govt's chief economist is batting for your salary growth
Anantha Nageswaran has pointed out that listed companies are making higher profits but they are paying less to their employees. Nageswaran nudged the private corporate sector to hire more and find the “right balance between capital-intensive and labour-intensive growth”, underling that while profits of listed companies--as a percentage of GDP--hit a 15-year high in 2023-24, their wage cost increase decelerated. Without a judicious balance between the share of corporations’ income making up their profits and that going to workers as wages, there won’t be adequate demand in the economy for companies’ own products to be bought, the CEA said at an event a few days ago. Sustained income growth bolsters both consumption and savings, eventually spurring economic expansion. “In other words, not paying workers well or not hiring workers enough will end up being actually self-destructive or harmful for the corporate sector itself and for small enterprises,” Nageswaran said, stressing that even legendary economist Adam Smith had written The Theory of Moral Sentiments before his seminal work--The Wealth of Nations. “The most important ingredient of long term growth and consumption is to ensure employment income growth and, thus, spending power growth. Otherwise, it will become a mutually self-destructive cycle,” the CEA said.

UPS FIVE Discover hospital symptoms Podcasts Munawar Faruqui reveals he had barely Rs 700 left to treat his son’s rare heart disease
Munawar Faruqui recently shared a heartbreaking anecdote. The ‘Bigg Boss 17’ winner revealed that his son Mikael was diagnosed with a rare disease when he was just one-and-a-half years old. To add insult to injury, Faruqui struggled with paying medical expenses. In a podcast with Janice Sequeira, he shared about his ordeal. He opened up about the financial hardships he faced during that challenging period. He disclosed that his son's medical diagnosis required injections priced at Rs 25,000 each, while he barely had Rs 700 in his pocket at the time. “That situation scares me. My son was one and a half years old back then. He fell ill, and for 2-3 days, his condition didn’t improve. After taking him to the hospital, we discovered he had Kawasaki disease. Three injections were required, each costing Rs 25,000. I needed Rs 75,000 but had only Rs 700-800 in my wallet," he said.
