Kerala becomes battleground in banks’ fight for NRI deposits
Banks are ramping up their operations in Kerala, known to be the hub for NRI deposits and remittances, while they strengthen their operations in the Gulf countries to deepen the customer connection. «NRI deposits, characterised by larger ticket sizes and consistent inflows provide a valuable source of long-term funding. NRIs often seek secure and profitable avenues to park funds domestically, making this segment a stable and resilient deposit base,» said Federal Bank executive director Shalini Warrier.

Will the antitrust showdown launched under Biden turn into 'Let's Make A Deal' under Trump?
Biden's administration may be kept on a shorter leash by Donald Trump after he returns to the White House next year. Although regulators began cracking down on tech powerhouses such as Google and Facebook during Trump's first term as president, most experts expect his second administration to ease up on antitrust enforcement and be more receptive to mergers and deal-making after years of hypervigilance under Biden's watch. One of the biggest reasons underlying the anticipated pivot stems from the widespread belief that the chief architects of the Biden administration's get-tougher stance — Lina Khan of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department's Jonathan Kanter — won't be part of the Trump regime.

Trump’s push for Ukraine peace finds growing acceptance in Europe

President-elect Donald Trump’s push for peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine is finding growing acceptance among Ukraine’s European allies, who increasingly worry that time isn’t on Ukraine’s side in the war. While European leaders have started discussions to see whether they could fill any funding gap for Kyiv if the incoming Trump administration cuts off support, officials in many capitals recognize that an off-ramp to the conflict appears increasingly necessary.

IBA suggests enforcement of odd-even rule in Delhi amid pollution problems
Indian Biogas Association (IBA) has called for the implementation of the odd-even vehicle rule in Delhi NCR to address air pollution and promote a shift toward electric and compressed biogas (CBG) or natural gas vehicles. This suggestion aligns with GRAP 4 measures, which enforce the rule when the air quality index (AQI) exceeds 450. Currently, GRAP 3 measures are in place as the AQI remains in the «severe» range, according to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). IBA Chairman Gaurav Kedia, in an interaction with PTI, emphasized the potential benefits of the odd-even rule. «We recommend implementing the Odd-Even Rule for Petrol and Diesel Vehicles in the coming months so that a good impact can be seen for the air pollution levels in Delhi, and subsidy on EVs and CNG/CBG vehicles, as this will compel the citizens to shift to greener fuel alternatives,» he stated. Delhi's air pollution intensifies during winter, with AQI levels often surpassing 300. This persistent issue has placed Delhi among the most polluted cities globally. While crop residue burning from neighboring states contributes to the problem, it is only part of a broader set of pollution sources.

CNG retailers want price hike, govt wants to see cost
City gas companies like Indraprastha Gas Ltd and Adani Total Gas Ltd are mulling an increase in CNG prices after supplies of cheaper input gas was cut for the second time in a month, but the government officials say the retailers must give a cost breakup to justify the hike. The government, with effect from November 16, cut supplies of low-priced natural gas coming from old fields to city gas retailers by up to 20 per cent. This reduction came on the back of a 21 per cent reduction on October 16. City gas retailers IGL, which retails CNG in national capital and adjoining cities, Mahanagar Gas Ltd that does the same in Mumbai, and Adani Total Gas Ltd which operates in Gujarat and elsewhere, in regulatory filings flagged profitability concerns due to supply cut and hinted at price hike. Officials in the ministry of petroleum and natural gas however are unimpressed as they feel the retailers operate on «hefty» margins and can easily absorb the additional cost they may have to incur on replacing the lost volumes with slighted higher priced gas from new wells or imported LNG.

Startups turn to ponds to find the next climate-fighting superfood
The tiny plant has many aliases, including more enticing ones like water lentils and lemna, and it’s got some momentum: Whole Foods Market Inc. named it one of the top food trends of 2025 while startup Plantible announced it raised a $30 million Series B funding round on Friday. There’s still a long road ahead for water lentils to go mainstream, though, and with one startup already failing, there are concerns the plant may struggle to reach widespread adoption. Companies are harvesting and marketing the plant that grows like, well, a weed. They’re finding a variety of uses, including selling the seeds whole as a way to add nutrients to everyday meals or drawing out the chemical properties to act like eggs or enhance flavors.

Air India to now charge extra for checking in second bag on Europe & UK flights
Air India flights to and from Europe and the UK will now face higher charges for checking in a second bag. Starting from October 17, Air India has introduced fare families, with the lowest economy fare offering one checked bag of up to 23 kg for these routes. Those who want to check in two bags will need to select a higher economy fare, with the price difference beginning at approximately Rs 4,000 for a one-way ticket. Most big Western airlines like Lufthansa allow one check-in bag to economy flyers and extra charges have to be paid for the second bag. British Airways starts with a handbag-only economy fare and then has higher economy fare levels that allow two bags of upto 23 kg each. Russia cuts gas to Austria in payment dispute, keeps EU flows
Russia, which before the Ukraine war was the biggest single supplier of natural gas to Europe, has lost almost all of its European customers as the EU tries to reduce its dependence and after the Nord Stream pipeline to Germany was blown up in 2022. Now one of the last main Russian gas routes to Europe — the Soviet-era Urengoy-Pomary-Uzhgorod pipeline via Ukraine — is due to shut at the end of this year, as Kyiv does not want to extend a five-year transit agreement which brings northern Siberian gas to Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Austria.
