Publishing polling booth-wise data will "vitiate" electoral space, create 'chaos': EC
Election Commission has opposed in the Supreme Court an NGO's demand to upload polling station-wise voter turnout data on its website within 48 hours of the conclusion of polling for each phase of the Lok Sabha elections, contending it will «vitiate» the electoral space and cause «chaos» in the poll machinery in the midst of the general elections. A vacation bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma is scheduled to hear the plea of NGO 'Association for Democratic Reforms', which has also sought direction to the poll panel that scanned legible copies of Form 17C Part-I (Account of Votes Recorded) of all polling stations be uploaded immediately after the polls. In its counter affidavit, the poll panel said there is no legal mandate to provide Form 17C to any person other than the candidate or his agent.

Russian missiles kill 6 in Ukraine's second-largest city where Moscow's troops are pressing
missiles slammed into Ukraine's second-largest city in the northeast of the country and killed at least six civilians early Thursday, officials said, as Kyiv's army labored to hold off an intense cross-border offensive by the Kremlin's larger and better-equipped forces. At least 16 people were injured as S-300 missiles struck the city of Kharkiv, regional Gov Oleh Syniehubov said. The sound of 15 explosions reverberated around the city of some 1 million people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the attack «extremely cruel.» He expressed renewed frustration at not getting enough air defense systems from the country's Western partners to prevent the barrages after more than two years of unrelenting war. The city of Kharkiv, which is the capital of the region of the same name, lies about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the Russian border. Moscow's troops have in recent weeks captured villages in the area as part of a broad push, and analysts say they may be trying to get within artillery range of the city.

China holds biggest military drills in a year around Taiwan since new President Lai Ching-te elected
Lai Ching-te took over as the island’s new president. The drills on Thursday were intended to “serve as a strong punishment for the separatist acts of ‘Taiwan independence’ forces and a stern warning against the interference and provocation by external forces," the official Xinhua News Agency reported, citing a military spokesman. The “external references" line is likely a reference to the US, which is Taiwan’s main military backer. President Joe Biden has repeatedly said the US would defend the democracy of 23 million people if attacked, while China has pledged to bring Taiwan under its control, by force if necessary. The exercises ramp up pressure on Lai, who took office in the island that makes the bulk of the world’s most advanced chips on Monday.

Concerned about China providing inputs to Russia's defence industrial base: US
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Washinton was concerned about China providing inputs to Russia's defence industrial base, adding that the Biden administration has taken action to deal with that in a «concerted way» with its allies and partners. He made the remarks while responding to a query about the UK Defence Minister's statement that the US and the UK have evidence that China could be providing lethal aid to Russia. In response to the question at the press briefing, Sullivan said, «Well, going back to 2022, I've actually stood at this podium and warned about my concern that China might provide weapons — direct lethal assistance to Russia. We didn't see that in 2022. We didn't see that in 2023. We have not seen that to date. I look forward to speaking with the UK to make sure that we have a common operating picture. We have had one; we've been on the same page.

Give up conflict
ego and the hankering for power are causes of family disturbances, social evils and war. The very basis of a war is created at a personal level. Failing to understand dharma and a lack of empathy for others are reasons for discord. Each religion has given importance to non- violence, love, compassion, goodwill and selflessness. But it is strange to see mankind involved with the opposites. It implies a serious lack of common sense. In day-to-day life, we segregate stale vegetables while purchasing, ensure that we receive the right amount of currency while exchanging, and never forget to check the water quality before drinking. But we fail to apply our intelligence in matters of dharma. We are happy to follow others and conclude that since 'it is said' or 'advised', it must be true. To become free thinkers, we should analyse the catastrophic effects of bad vrittis. The Buddha avoided war between the Sakyas and Koliyas arising from the water dispute of the River Rohini. After fighting the dreaded Kalinga war, Emperor Ashoka gave up violence and embraced peace and non-violence. The countries beyond his empire also accepted peace.

Russia begins nuclear drills in an apparent warning to West over Ukraine
tactical nuclear weapons that were announced by Russian authorities earlier this month in an apparent warning to senior Western officials who had spoken about the possibility of deeper involvement in the war in Ukraine. It was the first time Russia has publicly announced drills involving tactical nuclear weapons, although its strategic nuclear forces regularly hold exercises. According to a statement by the Defense Ministry released Tuesday, the first stage of the new drills envisioned «practical training in the preparation and use of non-strategic nuclear weapons,» including nuclear-capable Kinzhal and Iskander missiles. The maneuvers are taking place in the Southern Military District, which consists of Russian regions in the south, including on the border with Ukraine; Crimea, illegally annexed from Ukraine in 2014; and four Ukrainian regions that Russia illegally annexed in 2022 and partially occupies.
