NEW DELHI : Kharif sowing exceeded the levels of last year led by a surge in paddy while pulses and oilseeds fell, at a time the erratic south-west monsoon has cast a shadow over this year’s sowing and harvest. According to data released by the agriculture ministry on Friday, total kharif planting until 15 September was up 3.6% from the previous year to touch 109.5 million hectares (mh). Paddy cultivation jumped 10.8% from last year to 40.9 mh, while pulses fell 6.6% to 12.1 mh, including a 2.6% dip in tur (pigeon pea or arhar) and a 0.7% decrease in urad (black gram) to 4.3 mh and 3.2 mh, respectively.

Gaganyaan to validate the crew escape system will be launched in a month or two, a key ISRO official said on Friday. Bharat Electronics Limited on Friday announced that it has received an order of Rs 2,118.57 crore from Cochin Shipyard Limited for supply of various equipment for Indian Navy. The order consists of consisting of Sensors, Weapon equipment, Fire Control systems and Communication equipment for six numbers of Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMV), class of anti-surface warfare corvettes. The project will have participation of Indian electronics and associated industries, including MSMEs, which are sub vendors of BEL. The equipment manufactured by BEL are part of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' program. The The Bengaluru-headquartered defence major recently also received additional orders worth Rs 886 crore and the said orders pertain to upgrade of AFNET SATCOM N/W, upgrade of Akash Missiles with RF Seeker, Inertial Navigation System and other equipments with accessories and spares etc. Earlier in June, the comoany had bagged defence and non-defence orders worth Rs 2,191 crore.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a US government agency, said on Thursday that 2023 witnessed Earth's hottest August in its 174-year climate record. The sizzling month also marked the northern hemisphere's warmest meteorological summer and the southern hemisphere's warmest meteorological winter on record, the NOAA's National Centres for Environmental Information said. Berkeley Earth said August 2023 exceeded the previous record set in August 2016 by 0.31 degrees Celsius, «a surprisingly large margin, well outside the margin of uncertainty». Its researchers said: «We estimate that 13 per cent of the Earth's surface experienced its locally warmest August average, and 87 per cent of the Earth's surface was significantly warmer when compared to its local average during the period from 1951 to 1980.» In total, they estimated that 65 countries (mostly in the tropics) witnessed their warmest August on record. These countries include Bahrain, Barbados, Brazil, Cambodia, Cameroon, Chad, China, Colombia, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Morocco, Niger, Panama, Peru, the Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Suriname, Turkiye, Venezuela and Yemen. Some of these countries broke their August records by extraordinary margins.

Arizona resident in Mesa got more than he bargained for when he called a snake removal company to deal with what he believed were three lurking rattlesnakes in his garage. As it turned out, the situation was far more serious than initially thought, with a total of 20 snakes, comprising five adult western diamondback rattlers and 15 baby rattlesnakes, making themselves at home in the cluttered space. Adding to the unexpected twist, one of the adult rattlesnakes was pregnant. Marissa Maki, a skilled snake wrangler, was called in to handle the situation.

Delhi Weather Updates: Following heavy rains in the morning, waterlogging, traffic congestion was witnessed in several parts of the national capital. As per the Delhi traffic police, traffic is affected on Rohtak Road in both the carriageways from Rajdhani Park towards Tikri Border and vice-versa due to waterlogging. Russia have agreed to train Indian seafarers in the polar and Arctic waters. The decision was arrived at during talks to widen maritime cooperation in the Russian Pacific port city of Vladivostok on Wednesday. The talks also focussed on the use of new transport corridors such as the Northern Sea Route via the Arctic (Vladivostok-Chennai route). Discussions on India-Russia maritime cooperation gained momentum when ports, shipping and waterways minister Sarbananda Sonowal met Russian minister for development of the Far East and Arctic A O Chekunkov in Vladivostok on Wednesday.
