Performance on sustainability targets shapes top execs' pay
performance-based pay of their chief executives and senior management, to factor in the company's sustainability goal outcomes in appraisal KPIs amid their increasing influence on investor and consumer sentiments. Companies including ITC, Hindustan Unilever (HUL), Mahindra & Mahindra, Lupin, Cipla and Emaar have started to link their performance in areas like water and carbon positivity, plastic neutrality, climate-resilience, and diversity and inclusion in hiring to the remuneration of their senior management. This comes at a time when ESG (environment, social and governance practices) is becoming a buzz word in business deals, investment decisions and even consumer response to products, industry experts and executives said. ESG goals are becoming more common in annual KPIs (key performance indicators) for executive leaders, said Anandorup Ghose, partner at Deloitte India. While the weightage to these goals varies by industry, approximately around 10-15% weightage is assigned to ESG-linked metrics, he said.

Why is the world's largest iceberg, A23a, stuck in a swirling ocean vortex for years? Know here
iceberg in the world, might spend years trapped in its massive circle. This iceberg is roughly 1,640 square miles in size, which makes it five times larger than New York City and marginally larger than Rhode Island. In 1986, A23a separated from the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf in Antarctica. It floated away in 2020, having remained stranded in the Weddell Sea for decades. It didn't, however, make the anticipated transition into the South Atlantic's warmer waters. Rather, it became caught in a revolving current, known as a Taylor Column, just north of the inaccessible South Orkney Islands, with a daily rotation rate of roughly 15 degrees, as per the reports of MSN. A submerged object in a spinning system, such as Earth, is covered by ocean water, forming a Taylor Column. Here, the vortex is brought on by the Pirie Bank, a lump in the ocean floor. A spinning vortex is created above the obstruction as the river separates into two flows. And now the iceberg is spinning around inside this vortex. This phenomena is a distinct and unexpected aspect of ocean dynamics, according to scientists, including professor Mike Meredith and polar expert Mark Brandon.

Hindus should write names on their shops: Sadhvi Pragya
BJP leader Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur has asked Hindu shopkeepers to display their names on commercial establishments they own, apparently to differentiate Hindus from non-Hindus. The former Bhopal MP made this appeal amidst a row over directives issued by the BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand to highlight names of owners and staff of eateries along the Kanwar Yatra routes. These directives were subsequently stayed by the Supreme Court which on Monday extended its July 22 interim order. Days after the Ujjain mayor claimed shop owners had been directed to display their names and phone numbers on boards, the Madhya Pradesh government on July 21 clarified no such instructions had been issued for shop owners along the Kanwar Yatra route in the state, and there is no such compulsion. «I appeal to every Hindu to write their name on their shops and establishments. Those who write their names are Hindus and those who do not write are not Hindus. No one can stop you from writing your name because the country belongs to you. Rest everyone is sensible,» Thakur tweeted on Saturday.

MP wall collapse turns children's clay play at religious event into heart-breaking tragedy
children happily engrossed in making 'parthiv shivling' (creating shivlings out of clay) in Shahpur in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district on a wet Sunday had no inkling that a cruel twist of fate would snatch nine of their friends forever. Nine children in the 10-15 age group were killed and two injured after a wall of a dilapidated house near a temple collapsed between 8:30am and 9am, wiping out the happiness residents of Shahpur town were deriving from the three-day 'parthiv shivling nirmaan' programme, a staple of the month of 'Saavan', underway at Hardoi Temple. «I was returning after offering water to the shivling when a wall collapsed, trapping several children who were making clay shivlings under a tent. I was stunned and could not fathom what was happening. The urn in which I had taken water for the offering fell from my hand. I shouted and people for all around rushed to help,» said an eyewitness, who was one of the organisers of the religious event. A video of his narration of the incident to local police at the site, in which he can be heard saying the programme was on for the past three days, went viral on social media soon after. «The wall collapse took place in a dilapidated house belonging to one Patel. We did not know how precarious its condition was or else we would never have erected a tent using it as support. Constant rains further weakened the structure,» he said.

Gujarat government extends fishing ban till August 15; Congress opposes
Gujarat government has decided to extend the ban on fishing activities in the Arabian Sea by a fortnight till August 15, a move the Congress claimed to be «unfair and reckless» which will cause financial losses to fishermen. A senior official from the Gujarat fisheries department on Sunday said the decision was taken in consultation with the central government after considering a representation made by the fishermen's association to allow more time for fish to breed. The government also took into account scientific data and weather conditions to reach the decision, he said, adding the change is also likely to be adopted by other states on the western coast. Since 2021, the annual fishing ban in the state remained in effect from June 1 till July 31.
