Lightmatter releases new photonics technology for AI chips
Lightmatter, a startup valued at $4.4 billion, on Monday released two pieces of technology aimed at speeding up the connections between artificial intelligence chips. Instead of moving information between computer chips as electrical signals, Lightmatter's technology uses optical connections and what are known as silicon photonics to move the information using light. Mountain View, California-based Lightmatter has raised $850 million in venture funding to date as such optical technologies have kicked off a wave of investments in Silicon Valley amid a search for better ways to string together chips to power chatbots, image generators and other AI applications.

When push comes to sell, every high has a downside
Indian equities ended the financial year to March 31 on a positive note, but gains were modest against the previous fiscal year and compared with many other global markets. A wave of selling pressure from foreigners in the second-half of April-March eroded most of the gains, pushing indices to multi-month lows and denting overall sentiment. India, the world’s fifth-largest equity market in value, lagged behind more than six major global markets, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, China, the UK, Taiwan and the US as foreign investors turned bearish on India on account of slowing growth concerns and expensive share valuations.

China's Zhipu AI launches free AI agent, intensifying domestic tech race
Zhipu AI unveiled a free AI agent on Monday, joining a wave of similar launches in China's increasingly competitive AI market. The product, called AutoGLM Rumination, can perform deep research as well as tasks including web searches, travel planning, and research report writing, CEO Zhang Peng said at a lunch event in Beijing. The agent is powered by Zhipu's proprietary models, including its reasoning model GLM-Z1-Air and foundation model GLM-4-Air-0414. The company claims GLM-Z1-Air matches rival DeepSeek's R1 in performance while running up to eight times faster and requiring only one-thirtieth of the computing resources.

Hamas says it accepts a new Gaza ceasefire proposal but Israel makes a counter-offer
Early in the week, an Egyptian official described the proposal to The Associated Press, saying Hamas would release five living hostages, including an American-Israeli, from Gaza in return for Israel allowing aid into the territory and a weekslong pause in fighting. Israel would release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief media on the closed-door talks. On Saturday, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave no details about Israel's counter-proposal, which it said was offered after Netanyahu held consultations on Friday. Israel a week and a half ago ended its ceasefire with Hamas by launching a surprise wave of strikes that killed hundreds of people. The White House blamed Hamas for the renewed fighting. Israel has vowed to escalate the war until Hamas returns the 59 hostages it still holds — 24 of them believed to be alive. Israel also wants Hamas to give up power, disarm and send its leaders into exile. On Saturday, Israel widened its ground operations in Gaza's southern city of Rafah near the border with Egypt.

S&P 500 ends lower as investors digest Trump's auto tariffs
General Motors and Ford. Trump unveiled on Wednesday his plan to implement a 25% tariff on imported cars and light trucks effective on April 3, while the duty on auto parts begins on May 3. Investors are also bracing for a wave of reciprocal tariffs Trump plans to unveil on Wednesday, although the president has hinted there may be room for flexibility. In a volatile session on Wall Street, General Motors tumbled over 7% and Ford slid 3.9%. Car parts manufacturers Aptiv and BorgWarner each lost around 5%. Tesla edged up 0.4%, with investors betting the electric vehicle maker will be hurt less by tariffs because of its largely domestic production. Apple added 1.05%, helping limit the S&P 500's loss. Trump's mercurial trade policies have created uncertainty on Wall Street, as investors fret over potential disruptions to supply chains, hampered investment, and the specter of inflation threatening global economic growth.

Bill Gates’ startling AI prophecy: Humans won’t be needed ‘for most things' in 10 years
Speaking to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Gates explained that while we currently rely on human specialists—such as doctors and teachers—the rise of AI will make expert-level knowledge widely accessible, affordable, and free. “Great medical advice, great tutoring—it will all become commonplace,” he predicted. In a separate conversation with Harvard professor Arthur Brooks, Gates doubled down on his belief that AI is ushering in a new era of “free intelligence.” From diagnosing diseases to personalizing education, he sees AI fundamentally reshaping our world at an alarming pace. “It’s very profound and even a little bit scary—because it’s happening very quickly, and there is no upper bound,” he warned.

Asian stocks advance on Trump’s tariff signals
Asian stocks rose early Tuesday after US equities enjoyed one of their best sessions of the year, fueled by signs that President Donald Trump’s trade sanctions will be narrower than feared. Indexes in Australia and Japan advanced after Wall Street’s risk-on bid lifted shares of nearly all stripes in a rebound from a sharp selloff that has challenged the notion of US exceptionalism. The Nasdaq 100 added 2.2%. Hong Kong stocks were poised to drop at the open. Treasuries were little changed in Asian trading following a nine basis point climb in the 10-year yield to 4.33% on Monday.

Travel agencies claimed that bookings from Canada to the US are plummeting, while Canadian grocery store shoppers prefer more local products, as per the report.
