RBI tells banks to find ways to bridge the gap between credit and deposit growth
banks to find ways to bridge the gap between credit and deposit growth and reduce credit-deposit ratio, raising concerns over the persistent higher credit growth than deposit mobilisation which could pose a risk in business sustainability. The central bank Governor Shaktikanta Das held a meeting with the heads of public sector banks and select private sector lenders Wednesday where he spoke about high credit-deposit ratio, the resultant liquidity risk management challenges, trends in unsecured retail lending as well as cybersecurity and third-party risks and the need for improving customer services. Supernova insolvency case: NCLAT to wait for lenders' decision on settlement offer from Supertech Realtors
NCLAT on Wednesday said it will wait for the decision of lenders on a revised settlement offer by Supertech Realtors, which is developing a residential apartment, offices, retail and luxury hotels at its Supernova project. NCLAT also directed the Interim Resolution Professional (IRP) not to constitute a Committee of Creditors. However, it said the construction work for the project would be continued under the supervision of IRP. A three-member NCLAT bench observed that Supertech Realtors submitted an one-time settlement (OTS), and the lead bank principally agreed with the proposal and the proposal is under consideration by the consortium of banks. «In the meantime, we direct that the Committee of Creditors be not constituted. However, the ongoing project may be continued under the supervision of the IRP and the IRP shall extend all cooperation by the Corporate Debtor, its officers and employees in carrying out the construction,» said the 8-page NCLAT order.

Mt 100 Kanchenjunga well within sight
FPIs are back in the market, hoisting Sensex above 80k in the index's fastest 10,000-point rally. There is reason to believe FPIs are here to stay, and their pullout in May and June was a blip, not the trend. Uncertainty over election results is behind us, and the process of ministry formation provides investors assurance of policy continuity.

Is Russia planning to detonate a nuclear bomb in space? Here is everything you need to know
nuclear weapons have been well documented by the Hiroshima-Nagasaki bombings. What happens when nuclear weapons orbit the earth from space? This question has assumed importance since Russia launched the Cosmos 2553 satellite in 2022, just before its invasion of Ukraine. Presently, no one with the exception of Russia knows what exactly this satellite does. A member of the US Congress recently highlighted a pressing national concern. Many took this as a warning regarding the Cosmos 2553. The consequences are terrible and the US has been working towards the adaption of a resolution in the UNSC against the weaponization of space.

Gold outpaces major assets with 12% surge in 2024
World Gold Council (WGC) in its mid-year outlook 2024 has said that the catalyst for gold could come from falling rates in developed markets, that attract Western investment flows, as well as continued support from global investors looking to hedge bubbling risks amid a complacent equity market and persistent geopolitical tensions. Gold has performed remarkably well in 2024, rising by 12% year-to-date and outpacing most major asset classes. Gold has thus far benefitted from continued central bank buying, Asian investment flows, resilient consumer demand, and a steady drumbeat of geopolitical uncertainty. As we look forward, the key question in investors’ minds is whether gold’s momentum can continue or if it’s running out of steam. With a few exceptions, the global economy is showing wavering growth indicators – eager for rate cuts – amid lower but still uncomfortable inflation. And the market’s outlook is not too dissimilar.

Ajay Vora expects 16% compounding earnings growth; sees banks and metals doing better this year
Ajay Vora, Executive V-P & Head-Equities, Nuvama Asset Management, says they are playing two broad themes. On the consumption side, both at the domestic level as well as the exporters to the overseas market of the household goods looks interesting. Within domestic also, the consumption should ideally now pick up because if you look at segments like apparel, vacations, and the whole hospitality segment – I sense that demand is still very robust over there. They are also playing the infra theme through cement as a sector because we believe that with the consolidation happening there will be a decent price discipline which will result in higher profitability going forward. How are you dissecting the market construct because the kind of move that one has seen since the election results have been parabolic and now you have another event, the budget in just about two weeks. Ajay Vora: Broadly, we have been constructive on the markets throughout last year. Although there were some hiccups in between, I think till the time the earnings growth profile was pretty strong, I think that there is very little downside to the markets and that is why from the election outcome day also we have seen a very sharp rally from the lows.
