Target Merit economy Food wellness shock Interviews We are actually raising the real repo rate: MPC's Jayanth Varma
repo rate, the Monetary Policy Committee is not keeping rates unchanged, but actually raising the real repo rate, which is adjusted for inflation, Jayanth Varma, an external member of the rate-setting panel. Varma, who has expressed concerns about growth sacrifice due to restrictive monetary policy, voted for a 25-basis-point rate cut in the MPC's June policy review. Edited excerpts from the interview with Bhaskar Dutta: The RBI has been placing emphasis on the arduous and slow manner in which inflation is declining to the 4% target. Is the emphasis on reaching 4% and thus keeping rates unchanged a matter of ensuring the credibility of the monetary authority? First of all I think it is important to keep a sharp focus on the real policy rate and not on the nominal repo rate. It is a mistake to think that we are keeping rates unchanged by maintaining the same nominal repo rate; the fact is that, we are actually increasing the real repo rate. Second, there is no reason to worry about credibility at this point of time. Inflation expectations are well anchored, and the inflation targeting regime is working quite well. I do not find any merit in the proposition that an excessively high interest rate is needed to establish the credibility of monetary policy.

Citi Waves ICE wellness reports Schools Cool beans! cafes are having a field day this summer
summer heat is drawing people out to cafes serving cold beverages like iced coffee and tea as well as summer-specific products, according to multiple industry executives. National chains such as Third Wave Coffee, Chaayos, AbCoffee, and Boba Bhai said they are registering increasing footfall at their cafes — across northern India in particular — offering a stark contrast to reports of dipping sales at restaurant chains in the region that is battling record summer temperatures. While the availability of cold beverages and expansion of the on-premise menu is boosting sales, these cafes are also recording a spike in orders for delivery of summer-specific items. In addition, new-age cafes are popular destinations for remote working and meetings, which is further boosting footfalls.

wellness Justice pop information Department Courts squash Use of black money law retrospectively unconstitutional: High Court
black money law are popping the champagne. For the first time, the court has invoked Article 20 of the Constitution to squash law's retrospective use which was enacted in 2015 to allow the taxman to go after offshore bank accounts, properties and companies of resident Indians. Article 20 lays down that «no person shall be convicted of any offence except for violation of a law in force at the time of the commission of the act charged as an offence». In other words, one cannot be punished under a law which did not exist when the offence was committed. The Karnataka High Court has quashed the criminal proceedings initiated by the income-tax department against persons connected to overseas bank accounts and firms which were closed well before the Black Money Act came into force.

markets Citi wellness country song rights Can we please ethnically cleanse 'ethnic wear'?
ethnic wear,’ I reach for the nearest clothes hangar. Being in a garments store recently, a hangar was, indeed, close at hand. But I refrained from hooking someone with it simply because, the shop being in Khan Market, it was impossible for me to distinguish between customers and the store’s employees. It may have been a close call for at least one member of India’s thriving retail industry. But the term ‘ethnic wear’ pisses me off no end. What ‘ethnic wear’? I know that you know that I know what it means — sari, salwar kameez, choli, sherwani, bandhgala, Khan suit…. Like light, I know ‘ethnic wear’ when I see it. But for a voluble section of the country — which, in its continued quest to be a nation of virtue-signallers, recently took to the ludicrous binary of ‘India’ and ‘Bharat’ in English, thereby quietly emphasising the perceived dowdiness of the latter against the perceived spunkiness of the former — their perfunctory use of the term ‘ethnic wear’ sounds not just preposterous, but downright embarrassing. ‘Ethnic,’ as an adjective, merely denotes belonging to an ethnicity, a population group or subgroup sharing a common genetic descent and/or cultural background. So ‘Germanic’ is as good a description of ‘ethnic’ as ‘Hispanic’ or ‘Indian’ and ‘Western’ or ‘Nordic’. And yet, somehow, you enter a store — here in India — and there’s a section devoted to ‘ethnic wear’. In India.

UPS Extreme Racing wellness testing cricket Why WV Raman's credentials also deserve attention for head coach’s job
Gautam Gambhir looks set to be the Indian men’s team’s next head coach. Once Rahul Dravid made it clear that he would not be re-applying for the post at the end of the T20 World Cup, the speculation began. An unnamed foreigner was in the mix. At least two former Australian cricketers said they had received feelers from those in power, but were not interested in the job. So much so that Jay Shah, BCCI secretary, put out an official clarification that neither he nor anyone else from the Indian cricket board had approached either of these cricketers. This is just how the ecosystem works around Indian cricket. There is rarely anything simple or straightforward. And then, when it looked like Gambhir was in a one-man race, it came to light that WV Raman, another former Indian left-handed opening bat, had also applied for the job.

markets UPS Provident wellness trends Trade cover Sentiment is changing, FIIs could push market rally further, says Chandan Taparia of Motilal Oswal
FIIs long-short ratio, this is working well in the Indian market. If I look at the historical data of the last two-and-a-half, three years, then the ratio goes near 10% to 15% on the lower side and on upside it goes till 70-75%. And just a couple of days back, the ratio of FIIs long-short ratio was 12% to 13% and now (12:13), so that clearly indicates that FIIs covered their short positions. So, short covering trigger was there. They built some long position also after a long time. So, somehow it seems that sentiment is changing and that may support the Indian market. As of now, the SIP and the flow from the DIIs were supporting the market and now if FIIs do the short covering, then further leg of rally could be seen, says Chandan Taparia, Motilal Oswal ET Now: Nearly, it is like a range. Though we hit a lot of records this week, Nifty hit a record, Bank Nifty hit a record for this week, but the range where we started Nifty, we have clearly or closely ended on those points only, 50 odd points of gain only. Is there a sign of exhaustion now? Are we in for a consolidated trade for the coming week? How would you trade from here?

Opinion wellness Bill President Experts country Defer implementation of new criminal laws: Jairam Ramesh
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Saturday demanded that the enforcement of the three criminal laws, which are to come into force from July 1, be deferred, saying the Bills were «bulldozed» through Parliament. In a post on X, Ramesh said the implementation of the Bills be deferred to enable a thorough review and re-examination by a reconstituted Standing Committee on Home Affairs as they were passed at a time when 146 MPs had been suspended. «On Dec 25 2023, the President of India had given her assent to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023,the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023. The three far-reaching Bills had been bulldozed through Parliament without proper debate and discussion, and at a time when 146 MPs had been suspended from the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha,» Ramesh said. «Earlier the Bills had been bulldozed through the Standing Committee on Home Affairs without detailed interactions with stakeholders across the country and completely ignoring the written and very detailed dissent notes of a number of MPs belonging to different political parties, including the Indian National Congress, who were members of the Standing Committee,» he said.
