The court dismissed Sisodia's bail pleas in corruption and money-laundering cases lodged by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with alleged irregularities in the formulation and execution of the excise policy of 2021-22. Special judge Kaveri Baweja denied the relief, saying the stage is not right to grant bail to Sisodia.

Life Insurance has received a GST and penalty order of Rs 835 crore from Maharashtra's State Tax department, the company informed the exchanges on Tuesday. «The Authority has demanded GST along with applicable interest and penalty for FY2019,» ICICI Pru said. The order includes violations pertaining to reversal of input tax credit as per GST Law, mismatch in ITC claimed in GSTR -3B, GSTR-9 and GSTR 2A; non-payment of tax on sale of fixed assets and interest on GST payment on proposal deposit.

Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who specializes in communication and electronic warfare, took charge as the 26th Navy chief in New Delhi on Tuesday following the retirement of incumbent R Hari Kumar. Admiral Tripathi, an alumnus of Sainik School Rewa, was previously serving as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff before assuming command of the force. Bihar deputy CM and BJP leader Samrat Choudhary in an interaction with ET dismissed the notion that low voter turnout would impact the NDA while expressing confidence that the difference between the NDA and the opposition is high. He further added that low voting percentage won't impact the NDA in terms of winnability of seats. «Where is the new vote going to the opposition? In Bihar, the fight is at 80:20. Therefore, low polling is not going to impact us. In fact, we are determined to do better than 2019,» Choudhary told ET. In 2019, the NDA had won 39 of the 40 Bihar seats with JDU and LJP as their allies. The BJP leader said that there are around 20 seats in Bihar where the opposition has almost given a walk over. WhatsApp cannot issue GoI — or any government, for that matter — a fait accompli over encryption. The right to privacy is by no means absolute in any system of law, and governments are well within their rights to seek with due process information for law enforcement. There can be debate over what constitutes due process, and how to go about satisfying its requirements. In these pursuits, law and technology need to come closer on the art of the possible. But absolute positions, such as threatening to stop services if forced to dilute encryption on occasion, can end up badly. Indian courts, unfortunately, have a long list of precedents that fetter fundamental rights. So, it would be better for everyone that things don't come to such a pass.

Jana Small Finance Bank has reported doubled its March quarter net profit from ordinary activities at Rs 167 crore against Rs 81 crore in the year ago period, backed by robust business expansion and lower credit cost. The net profit however comes to Rs 344 crore, reflecting a four-fold jump, if the deferred tax assets of Rs 170 crore is included.

Patanjali Foods, a leading FMCG player in India, is under scrutiny as it has been served a show-cause notice by the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) in Chandigarh for an alleged undue claim of Rs. 27.5 crore in input tax credit (ITC). This notice, issued under the CGST Act, highlights a potential discrepancy in the company's tax filings that could result in penalties. In response to the notice, a spokesperson for Patanjali Foods stated, «The Company has received a Show Cause Notice from the Directorate General of GST Intelligence, Chandigarh Zonal Unit. The Company, its Officers, and authorized signatories were asked to explain why input tax credit amounting to Rs 27,46,14,343 should not be recovered (with interest), and why penalties should not be imposed under Section 74 and other applicable provisions of the CGST Act 2017/Uttarakhand SGST Act, 2017, in conjunction with section 20 of IGST Act 2017.» The company has asserted its intention to vigorously defend its position before the authorities. However, it has also clarified that the financial implications of the notice cannot be determined until the proceedings are concluded.
