WhatsApp Ration scam: TMC leader Shajahan skips ED summons for third time
Shajahan Sheikh failed to appear before Enforcement Directorate (ED) officers on Monday despite being summoned for the third time in connection with the multi-crore ration scam, an officer said. ED officers, who remained waiting for the TMC leader till evening with a list of questions at their office in the CGO Complex in Salt Lake here, said they were mulling legal options regarding their next step in the matter. «Shajahan did not appear before our officers today for questioning. They waited for Sheikh till late evening. No one on his behalf appeared before our officers today. We are mulling legal options to decide on our next step,» the ED officer told PTI. The ED had issued the summons to the TMC leader for his alleged involvement in the multi-crore ration scam.

National Anti-Profiteering Authority (NAA). The anti-profiteering provisions under the GST law makes it is mandatory for suppliers of goods and services to pass on the benefit of any reduction in the rate of tax, or the benefit of input tax credit, to recipients by way of commensurate reduction in prices. A Bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud issued notice to the Finance ministry, the National Anti-profiteering Authority, its Director General, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, and the GST Council on an appeal by Excel Rasayan alleging that the provisions are «manifestly arbitrary and violative of Article 14 of the Constitution of India» as they do not provide any methodology or objective parameters for computation of profiteering. The provisions do not define «commensurate benefit,» which is imperative for determining profiteering, said the petitioner.

India's edible oil imports in January declined by 28% year-on-year, largely because of carry-over stock from the previous year, according to the Solvent Extractors' Association (SEA). Increase in international prices of palm oil and the upcoming harvest of mustard crop are some of the other reasons that led to cut in the country’s cooking oil imports. According to SEA, import of cooking oil in January 2024--reported at little more than 12 lakh tonnes--is down by 28% compared with January 2023.

Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India to finalise the code of conduct or guidelines preferably in three months for the effective functioning of the committee of creditors (CoC). The finalisation of the guidelines should be done without diluting the sanctity of the «commercial wisdom» of the committee of creditors and the legislative intent of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016, it observed. Expressing displeasure over how the board hasn’t yet framed the guidelines, Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav noted that the board had notified a discussion paper in 2021 on various issues, including the code of conduct for the CoC.

Canara Bank will soon seek regulatory approval to convert an IT subsidiary into a credit card company as the state-owned lender aims to leverage its existing customer base for selling credit cards with unbridled focus to tap this potential growth market. Managing director K Satyanarayana Raju told ET that the bank is in the advanced stages of submitting an official application with the Reserve Bank of India to start the venture where it will have a 94% stake with Karur Vysya Bank holding the remainder. Canara Bank currently holds 69.14% stake in the subsidiary, Canbank Computer Services. Bank of Baroda owns 18.52% while DBS Bank and Karur Vysya hold 6.17% each. Canara Bank has received commitment from BoB and DBS to buy out their respective stakes.

Union ministers on Monday evening began talks here with farmer leaders in a bid to dissuade them from their 'Delhi Chalo' march to press the Centre for enactment of a law on minimum support price for crops. The ministers, including food and consumer affairs minister Piyush Goyal and agriculture minister Arjun Munda, were holding the second round of talks with the farmer leaders at the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration in Sector 26 here. Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal and Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee general secretary Sarwan Singh Pandher, among others, were part of the meeting, which is currently underway. SKM (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have announced that more than 200 farm unions would head to Delhi on Tuesday to press the Centre to accept their demands, including the enactment of a law to guarantee a minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

Customer interest and depositors interest is uppermost for us,» RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said after the Finance Minister's customary address to the central bank's board. SWRE is implementing solar projects at NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd's (NTPCREL) solar park in Khavda, Rann of Kutch, a company statement said. «Nextracker has been selected for repeat order. Nextracker was selected to supply its flagship solar trackers for phase two (1.5 GW) and phase three (375 MW) solar projects at NTPCREL's solar park,» SWRE said. With this order, SWRE and Nextracker have surpassed over 5 gigawatts of collaborative solar power generation projects globally.

Supreme Court said on Monday it will list the plea of the Uddhav Thackeray faction challenging Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar's order declaring the Shiv Sena bloc led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as the «real political party» after the outfit's split in June 2022. The plea of the Thackeray faction was listed for hearing on Monday but the matter could not be taken up during the day due to paucity of time. «Let them (Shinde faction) file a response. The notice was issued earlier,» senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the Thackeray faction, told the bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra. «We will list it,» the CJI said.
