defence ministry signed a Rs 2,269-crore deal with state-run Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) on Tuesday for the procurement of 11 Shakti warfare systems, along with associated equipment. The electronic warfare system will be installed on-board the frontline warships of the Indian Navy, officials said. The Shakti systems are capable of accurately intercepting electronic emissions and implementing counter measures in a dense electromagnetic environment, they said. «The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Hyderabad on February 13 for procurement of 11 Shakti Electronic Warfare Systems along with associated equipment/accessories for Indian Navy under Buy (Indian-IDDM) category at a total cost of Rs 2,269.54,» the ministry said in a statement.

NIA court here on Tuesday framed charges, including under the anti-terror law UAPA, against nine people accused in the murder case of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal. Kanhaiya Lal was hacked to death at his shop in the busy Hathipole area of Udaipur on June 28, 2022 by two cleaver wielding men for allegedly supporting a social media post against Islam. The two accused, Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Gause, had also made a video of the act and posted it online, which sent shockwaves across the country. The case is being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Indian Air Force (IAF) met with an accident during a training sortie on Tuesday in West Bengal. Both the pilots ejected safely, according to the IAF. The plane crashed in civilian area near the Kalaikunda Air Force Station between 4 pm and 5 pm while returning from the training sortie. There was no loss of life or damage to civilian property in the accident. A Court of Inquiry has been constituted to find out the cause of the mishap.

Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda on Tuesday said a law guaranteeing Minimum Support Price (MSP) on crops cannot be brought in a hurry without consulting all stakeholders and urged the protesting farmer groups to have a structured discussion with the government on the issue. In an interview with PTI, Munda also cautioned the protesting farmers to be «aware and alert» about some elements which could defame their protest for political benefits. Munda is part of the ministerial delegation that held two rounds of discussion with the farmers' groups, including Samyuka Kisan Morcha (non-political), Kisan Mazdoor Morcha in Chandigarh, to resolve their concerns. However, as the talks remained inconclusive, farmers' groups have started their 'Delhi Chalo' march on Tuesday.

Calcutta High Court on Tuesday set aside the promulgation of prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC at Sandeshkhali, which has been witnessing protests over the last one week. A petition was filed by two residents of Sandeshkhali seeking a direction from the court for lifting the prohibitory orders in the area. Justice Jay Sengupta set aside the promulgation of Section 144 of CrPC by the district administration at Sandeshkhali in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas, holding that the manner in which it was done was not right. Petitioner's counsel Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya claimed that the foundation of promulgation of the prohibitory orders in Sandeshkhali was not there and that it was done to curtail the rights of people to protest.

National Commission for Scheduled Castes has taken suo motu cognisance of incidents in West Bengal's restive Sandeshkhali area and asked the administration to submit an action taken report within three days. In a letter addressed to the West Bengal chief secretary, director general and inspector general of police and the district magistrate of North 24 Parganas, the panel referred to a news report on the situation in Sandeshkhali over the last few days. «The Commission has decided to investigate/inquire into the matter in pursuance of the powers conferred upon it under Article 338 of the Constitution of India,» the Commission said in a letter made public on Tuesday.

His reaction came as the AAP asserted it will contest six seats in the national capital, leaving just one for senior INDIA bloc ally Congress. Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said the Centre is going to spend Rs 2 lakh crore on road infrastructure in Uttarakhand and its roads will be like those in the United States by the end of 2024. Gadkari was speaking on the occasion of national highway projects worth over Rs 2,000 crore in Tanakpur. «Rs 1.40 crore is being spent in Uttarakhand over road infrastructure at present to which an additional Rs 60 crore will soon be added to make it a total expenditure of Rs 2 lakh crore,» Gadkari said. «In the presence of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami I want to announce that by the end of 2024, the national highways in Uttarakhand will be matching international standards. They will be like those in the US,» he added.

National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced that 23 candidates have achieved a perfect score of 100 in the JEE-Main engineering entrance exam. The majority of these high scorers hail from Telangana. A total of 11.70 lakh candidates appeared for this crucial exam. Out of the 100 NTA scorers, seven are from Telangana, two from Haryana, three each from Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra, two from Delhi, and one each from Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. The NTA officials clarified that the NTA score is not the same as the percentage of marks obtained but represents normalised scores. A senior official explained, «NTA scores are normalised scores across multi-session papers and are based on the relative performance of all those who appeared for the examination in one session. The marks obtained are converted into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 for each session of examinees.»

Eicher Motors on Tuesday reported a strong 34.4% year-on-year (YoY) growth in consolidated net profit for the quarter ended December to Rs 996 crore, and this was tad higher than an ETNow poll of Rs 969 crore. Consolidated revenue from operations rose 12.3% YoY to Rs 4,179 crore, which too, was above the estimated Rs 4,048 crore.

He announced plans for a significant demonstration at the Pune regional transport office (RTO) on February 20, followed by a cessation of Ola and Uber cab operations until revised fares are enforced. Additionally, autorickshaws associated with these companies and other app-based aggregators will also suspend services, with only metered autorickshaws remaining operational.

India's oldest Test cricketer and former captain Dattajirao Gaekwad died on Tuesday due to age-related ailments. Gaekwad, who was the father of former India opener and national coach Aunshuman Gaekwad, was 95. He breathed his last early this morning after battling for life in the ICU of a Baroda hospital for the past 12 days, a source in the family told PTI. He played 11 Tests for India between 1952 and 1961, captaining the national team in 1959 when it toured England.
