438 alcohol-related deaths reported in 10 months; 86 died due to consumption of drugs in 14 months in Mizoram

The Minister while replying to a query of ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) MLA Jeje Lalpekhlua, said that 361 men and 77 women died due to alcohol related issues in between April last year and January this year.
The previous Mizo National Front (MNF) government, as part of its election promises promulgated the Mizoram Liquor Prohibition Act, 2019 to curb the misuse of alcohol and drugs.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma earlier said that the state government would soon review the Mizoram Liquor Prohibition Act, 2019 as the state government has been facing revenue crunch.
Sources said that illegal manufacture and sale of local liquor in the outskirts of Aizawl and other parts of the city are going on.
These unscientifically manufactured local liquor are unhygienic and unsafe for human consumption, the sources said.
An official of Mizoram’s Excise and Narcotics Department said that 86 people including 13 women have died since January last year and upto February this year due to consumption of various drugs.
Of the 86 people, 76 died last year and 10 this year (January and February).
A variety of drugs including heroin, highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, also locally called Yaba tablet or party tablet and various other drugs smuggled in from Myanmar have been one of the most trafficked drugs in recent years.
