50th Student Academy Awards ceremony was held by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The award ceremony took place at Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills celebrating the exceptional talents of students in film. The main event of the night was the announcement of who would take home the prestigious Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medal awards.
Representing a diverse range of artistic expressions, these medalists all had one thing in common: they were students. Leo Behrens from the American Film Institute won gold in the Alternative/Experimental category for his work “Skin.” Collaborators Gabriel Augerai, Romain Augier, and Yannick Jacquin from France’s École des Nouvelles Images won gold in animation with their piece “Boom.” In the same category silver went to “Diplomatie de l'Éclipse,” created by César Luton, Achille Pasquier, and Clémence Bailly from France’s MoPA 3D Animation School. Lisa Kenney from the United Kingdom’s National Film and Television School took home bronze for her piece “Mum's Spaghetti.”
The Gold Medal in Documentary went to Giorgio Ghiotto. He produced a very compelling film called “Wings of Dust.” Lyuwei Chen also from New York University won the Silver Medal for “Duet,” and Jean Chapiro of Columbia University took home the Bronze Medal for the documentary “Hasta Encontrarlos (Till We Find Them).”
In Austria, Mark Gerstorfer from Filmakademie Wien won the Gold Medal in the Narrative category for his captivating film “Invisible Border.” Iain Aigin Stronach Forbes from Den Norske Filmskolen in Norway received the Silver Medal for “Revisited,” and Tamara Deni of Hamburg Media School in Germany won the Bronze Medal for “Istina (Truth).”
