aurora borealis, according to Met Office forecasters.
Once a rare sight in the UK, the Northern Lights may return this week, according to Met Office experts. «Ongoing fast solar winds» in the northern hemisphere are predicted to cause the aurora borealis to emerge, which should light up the skies over northern Scotland tonight.
According to the Met Office, there is a «chance of visible aurora» associated with any «glancing coronal mass ejections» (CMEs), which are massive expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the sun's atmosphere, as reported by The Daily Star.
Only when charged particles strike gases in the Earth's atmosphere near the magnetic poles do aurora displays happen. Different wavelengths of light are released when they collide, producing vibrant sky displays.
Since the lights are unlikely to be seen until it is very dark, sightings are best in remote, open locations with views of the northern horizon.
