Harvey Weinstein has eventually filed a lawsuit against New York City while seeking at least $5 million in damages due to alleged medical negligence and unsanitary conditions while incarcerated at Rikers Island, reported Deadline.
According to Deadline, the lawsuit which was submitted during the month of November claims that the city and its correctional facilities have failed to provide adequate medical care for Harvey Weinstein's serious health issues which includes chronic myeloid leukemia and diabetes. His attorney named Imran H. Ansari described that the conditions at Rikers as 'deplorable’ while likening the facility to a ‘gulag’ where inmates are treated poorly.

Harvey Weinstein's legal team asserted that during a recent visit, they observed bloodstains on his clothing, unwashed garments and a lack of clean underwear which are severe conditions deemed to be unacceptable for someone with his medical vulnerabilities, asserted Deadline. The lawsuit argues that these circumstances amount to cruel and unusual punishment while violating Harvey Weinstein's Eighth Amendment rights.
This legal action coincides with a federal judge's ruling that found New York City in contempt for failing to address ongoing violence and brutality at Rikers Island.
