Budget travel gone extreme: Woman fakes being pregnant to avoid airline baggage fees. Here's how she did it
Airline baggage fees have long been a frustrating issue for budget-conscious travelers, leading some to find creative ways to avoid extra charges. One such traveler, Grace Hale, took an unconventional approach by pretending to be pregnant to bypass Ryanair’s luggage fees on her flight from England to Scotland.
Hale, a 20-year-old from Dallas, Texas, was flying from Stansted to Edinburgh and found herself unable to fit all her belongings into her carry-on. Determined not to pay the hefty baggage fees, she came up with an unusual solution. «It’s ridiculously expensive if you want to take a bag on a Ryanair flight, so I just get the carry-on option and shove everything inside,» she told What's The Jam.
The Plan: A Fake Baby Bump
To execute her plan, Hale stuffed her makeup bag and jackets under her top to create a realistic-looking pregnancy bump. She even went the extra mile by researching pregnancy stages. «I Googled what pregnancy bumps looked like at different months and how far along I’d be,» she said. «I decided on 26 weeks, which is so lucky because at 28 weeks you need a doctor’s note.»
Before reaching the airport, Hale practiced her ruse to ensure a convincing performance. «I practiced in the train station by putting the makeup bag under my top, and I wrapped the jackets around it so nothing could fall out because that would be embarrassing,» she shared. Her dedication paid off, as she successfully made it through security and onto the flight without raising suspicion.
