National Health Commission (NHC) has released its first set of guidelines aimed at standardising the diagnosis and treatment of obesity, as over half of the adult population is currently classified as overweight or obese. This trend is expected to continue, with projections suggesting that by 2030, the obesity rate could reach 65.3 per cent.
Published on October 17, the guidelines highlight the growing public health crisis posed by obesity in China, which is now recognised as the sixth leading risk factor for death and disability in the country.
However, the country faces a dual challenge contributing to this issue.
First, as the economy modernises, jobs are increasingly becoming sedentary; and second, an economic slowdown is pushing people towards cheaper food options that are comparatively more unhealthy. These two, clubbed with factors such as job stress, long working hours, and poor diets are highly prevalent in urban areas.
Meanwhile, in rural regions, agricultural work is becoming less physically demanding, compounded by inadequate healthcare that hampers effective screening and treatment for weight-related issues.
