West Bengal government has announced a 4% increase in dearness allowance (DA) for state employees and pensioners. The hike, effective from April 1, 2025, was revealed in the state budget presented by Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya on Wednesday. Dearness allowance is a cost-of-living adjustment provided to government employees and pensioners to help them cope with inflation and rising prices. It is calculated as a percentage of the basic salary or pension and is revised periodically.
The increase brings the total DA to 18% for over 10 lakh state government employees and pensioners. The move aims to address ongoing concerns raised by employees who have been demanding better compensation.
Political opponents argue that the DA hike is intended to gain favor before the 2026 Assembly elections. However, Bhattacharya defended the decision, stating, “With this 4% increase in DA, we are reaffirming our commitment to the welfare of our employees.”
