Dattatreya Jayanti or Datta Jayanti is being observed today.
One of the most sacred days in the Hindu calendar, Dattatreya Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth of the Hindu deity Dattatreya. Dattatreya is an entity that was born when the three divine male deities — Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwar (Shiva) combined.
As per the Drik Panchang, Dattatreya Jayanti is celebrated on the Purnima Tithi or full moon day of the Margashirsha or the Agrahayana month, which usually coincides with the months of December or January.
As per the Hindu calendar, Datta Jayanti will commence on December 26, at 5:46 AM and end on December 27, at 6:02 AM.
A combination of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Maheshwar (Shiva), three principal deities of Hinduism, also known as the Trimurti or Holy Trinity, Dattatreya was said to have the qualities of all three.
He was the son of the sage Atri and his wife Anusuya. Anusuya, a virtuous lady underwent rigorous tapasya (meditation) for an offspring who would have the qualities of the three deities.
To test her, the three deities appeared to her in the form of wandering ascetics and asked Anusuya for alms. She uttered a powerful mantra and turned the mendicants into infants. She then fed them milk.
As the sacred trio didn’t return, their wives — goddesses Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Parvati appeared in front of Anusuya and begged her to return the Gods to their true forms. She acquiesced and was blessed with a son whom she named Dattatreya.
