Did the Democrats nudge Ukraine's Zelensky to reject mineral deal with U.S? Here's what a report is saying
Volodymyr Zelensky’s key meeting before the Oval Office drama
According to Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Zelensky’s meeting earlier in the day with Democrats had a significant impact on his approach when he finally sat down with Trump at the White House, as per the report. Murphy shared on social media that during their discussion, Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine would not support a peace agreement with Russia if it didn’t include real security arrangements for Ukraine, reported New York Post.
Murphy’s office posted on social media platform X at 11:15 a.m. Friday, “Just finished a meeting with President Zelensky here in Washington. He confirmed that the Ukrainian people will not support a fake peace agreement where Putin gets everything he wants and there are no security arrangements for Ukraine,” quoted New York Post.
This meeting took place just hours before Zelensky was due to meet with Trump, and it seems that Democratic leaders in Washington were advising Zelensky to reject Trump’s proposed deal, according to New York Post's op-ed. The deal would have seen Ukraine and the US partner to mine Ukraine’s rich rare-earth mineral deposits, with the proceeds being used to help rebuild Ukraine, as per the report.
Impact of Democratic advice
The Oval Office meeting with Trump was meant to be a productive discussion about finalizing the deal, but quickly unravelled into a heated confrontation. Trump pushed back when Zelensky voiced concerns and, in the end, Trump ended the meeting abruptly, asking Zelensky to leave.
