Nicholas Dias, Secretary for Liturgy Commission for the Delhi Archdiocese, was contacted by the US Embassy in New Delhi. The purpose of this unexpected call was to request a private mass for President Joe Biden during his visit to Delhi. On a Saturday morning, Father Nicholas fulfilled this request by conducting a private service for the US President, setting the spiritual tone for President Biden's participation in the G20 deliberations in India.
Father Nicholas shared, «I received an invite from the US embassy, who had my contact through embassy people whom I knew personally, asking me whether I can celebrate the Holy Eucharist for the President of America.
They sought an appointment with me, met me personally at the clergy home, next to the Archbishop's house, and they told me that it is a short service of 20 minutes. If they can avail of my services, which I gladly accepted.»
For Father Nicholas, this was a unique opportunity to connect with President Biden, who is a devout Catholic. The President opened up about his grandmother's faith, which served as the starting point for their discussion.
Father Nicholas had meticulously prepared a minute-to-minute liturgy to ensure the service adhered to its timing. He included the President's personal doctor and other participants in the Holy Eucharist, fostering a sense of faith and fellowship.
During the service, Father Nicholas incorporated prayers for the success of the G20 Summit and offered blessings for both India and America. President Biden actively participated in the prayers, emphasizing their importance.
