Joe Biden for Republic Day celebrations in January next year, US Ambassador Eric Garcetti disclosed on Wednesday, adding that the invite was extended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the sidelines of the G 20 summit in the capital earlier this month.
There has been speculation that India will invite leaders of the Quad nations — US, Japan and Australia — for the annual parade but there has been no official confirmation of the same. Garcetti did not comment on the possibility of other leaders being invited for the celebrations.
Biden could be the second US President to take part in Indian Republic Day celebrations after Barak Obama who was the Chief Guest in 2015.
Next year's celebrations hold a symbolic value as it would be the 75th Republic Day for India.
Indo-US ties have zoomed ahead over the past few years, with initiatives across high end technology, space, nuclear energy, climate change and other pressing global issues. The US is also a large supplier of arms to the Indian military, with several major systems like anti submarine aircraft, attack choppers and assault rifles being inducted over the past decade.
