The constituency, which is a part of the East Delhi Lok Sabha segment, has traditionally been a battleground between Congress and the BJP, with AAP emerging as a formidable contender in recent years. The BJP’s Anil Kumar Bajpai narrowly won in 2020, defeating AAP’s Naveen Chaudhary by 6,079 votes. Bajpai had also won the 2015 election on an AAP ticket before switching to BJP.
Arvinder Singh Lovely, contesting for the BJP this time, was a four-time MLA from Congress, winning in 1998, 2003, 2008, and 2013. He later lost the 2019 Lok Sabha election to BJP’s Gautam Gambhir by a significant margin. Congress candidate Kamal Arora, who had initially joined AAP in 2012, returned to Congress just before the election announcement.
Arvinder Singh Lovely, a prominent Sikh leader, is considered a strong contender for the seat. However, some local voters expressed scepticism due to his switch from Congress to BJP. Despite multiple attempts, he did not respond to requests for comment.
