Gurgaon's GMDA has increased the towing charges for vehicles parked illegally in 'no parking' zones in the city. As per a TOI report, the new rates will be effective from October 26. Heavy and medium vehicles, including commercial vehicles, will now be charged Rs 2,000 for towing, compared to the previous amount of Rs 1,000.
Light vehicles (four-wheelers) will face a fine of Rs 1,000, up from Rs 500, while two-wheelers will be fined Rs 500 instead of Rs 200.
GMDA officials stated that these charges have been revised after a period of five years, following the recommendation of the traffic police. The towing charges are in addition to the penalties imposed by the traffic police under the Motor Vehicles Act, which include fines of Rs 500 for improper parking and causing inconvenience to commuters, and Rs 1,500 for subsequent offenses.
GMDA aims to deter illegal parking and encourage the use of designated parking spots with this increase in charges. R D Singhal, GMDA's chief general manager (mobility division), told TOI that wrongly parked vehicles often lead to traffic congestion and disrupt smooth traffic flow. To address this issue, 'no parking' signs have been installed at various locations where parking is not permitted.
Previously, MCG was responsible for towing vehicles, but in 2019, the responsibility was transferred to GMDA through an app-based mechanism to ensure transparency. GMDA currently uses GPS systems and cranes of different capacities to tow two, three, and four-wheelers violating parking norms. While GMDA collects towing charges, the traffic police issue challans for wrong parking under the Motor Vehicles Act.
