US will make history. For the right reasons, or the wrong.
Depending on state regulations, automatic recounts may be initiated, or a campaign may request a recount if the actual vote margin remains that narrow in some states.
Several laws in the United States require presidential elections to be held automatically. Here's what you should know about the rules that govern whether and how presidential race recounts are conducted in each of the seven battleground states.
Arizona law allows for a recount if the margin between the two candidates receiving the most votes is equal to or less than half a percent of the total votes cast. The recount must be completed five days after the canvass of the vote, which is November 30. However, a candidate, party, or voter can't request a recount in Arizona.
In Georgia, a candidate can ask for a recount within two days of the certified results if the margin between the candidates is less than half a percentage point of the vote. Election officials can request recounts if they think there is an issue with the results, and the secretary of state can ask for a recount if a candidate petitions them about a suspected issue. There is no explicit deadline for a recount to be completed.
