If an individual wants to pay various types of income taxes like self-assessment tax, advance tax, etc then he/she needs to fill up challan 280 – the form for depositing these taxes with the government. However, there are two ways to fill up and pay income tax using challan 280, i.e., online and offline.
However, note that even if an individual chooses the offline method to pay income tax using challan 280, first the challan itself has to be downloaded from the e-filing ITR portal. Therefore, the start of the offline process also requires going online.
Here’s how both the processes, offline and online tax payment using challan 280 works:
How to pay income tax online
Step 1: An individual needs to click on the ‘e-pay Tax’ button on the e-filing portal- https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal.
If an individual has not logged in to the e-filing ITR portal, then the ‘e-pay Tax’ button will be visible under quick links. If an individual has logged in to the e-filing ITR portal, then the ‘e-pay Tax’ button will be visible under the e-file button.
Step 2: Once the e-pay tax button is clicked, a new webpage will open.
This webpage will be the same irrespective of whether an individual is coming here after logging into the e-filing ITR portal or directly without logging in. On this webpage, the individual has to fill in details of the assessment year (A.Y.) for which he/she intends to pay income tax and the type of payment i.e., advance tax, self-assessment tax, etc.
Fill in these details and click 'Continue’.
