Haier in Pune, Mumbai, and Noida, and the premises of its promoters. The searches are in connection with underreporting of income and royalty payment, officials said. The email and text query ET sent to Haier India remained unanswered till press time.
«This is related to underreporting of income and discrepancies in royalty payment,» an official aware of the discussion told ET and added that they will give further details once the search operations are over. Till late evening, the search operation was still on and the IT department team may continue its searches for one more day, the official said. The official added that the search team was looking at the account books of the company and has collected laptops and other digital records for further verification.
The income tax department is keeping a close watch on tax evasion in the name of royalty payments, especially by Chinese companies. The government detected ₹ 9,075 crore tax evasion by Chinese mobile handset makers since April 2017, of which the Indian tax authorities have been able to recover ₹ 1,630 crore, according to data presented in the Parliament by the ministry of electronics and Information Technology (Meity). Apart from that, a separate investigation into Chinese mobile companies is going on for customs duty and Goods and Services Tax evasion.
