Neeraj Chopra made India proud again after he became the first Indian to win a gold medal in the World Athletics Championships. He scripted history on Sunday with a best throw of 88.17m in the men's javelin final in Budapest.
The 25-year-old dominated the competition and achieved his best throw of the day in his second attempt.
With this prestigious gold medal, Chopra becomes the second Indian — after legendary shooter Abhinav Bindra — to simultaneously hold the Olympics and World Championships titles. Bindra won the World Championships title when he was 23 in 2006, and the Olympics gold at 25 in 2008.
Chopra is the the third javelin thrower in history to simultaneously hold the Olympics and World Championships titles after the iconic Jan Zelezny of the Czech Republic and Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway.
Congratulatory messages are pouring in from Corporate India bosses.
Businesswoman Nita Ambani, who is a sports enthusiast, was impressed to see Team India's promising run at the recently concluded championships in Budapest.
Calling Chopra's win a «momentous day» for India, the founder and Chairperson of Reliance Foundation (the philanthropic arm of Reliance Industries Limited) said she was proud to see the Tricolour soar high on the world athletics stage.
She also congratulated DP Manu, Parul Chaudhary, Jeswin Aldrin, India's men's relay team, and Reliance Foundation athlete Kishore Jena for their outstanding performances in the global arena.
Reliance Foundation has partnered with the Athletics Federation of India to enable Indian athletes at the grassroot level.
Cheering for India, Edelweiss Mutual Fund Managing Director and CEO Radhika Gupta wished Chopra with a popular title track of the 1977 movie 'Amar Akbar Anthony'.
