According to a Today.com report, several dogs in the US are coming down with what seems like a mysterious yet near-fatal condition. The illness has claimed the lives of some dogs already, putting several seasoned vets at a wit’s end.
The dogs start with a cough that never seems to go away and ends with serious pneumonia. Often the dog does not respond to the first line of action — antibiotics.

A research team based at the University of New Hampshire’s Veterinary Diagnosis Laboratory told NBC News that a small bacterium may be the culprit behind the outbreak. The minuscule bacterium can easily bypass the immune system of our fur buddies and attack their respiratory tract, lungs, and heart.
