ISRO Chief S Somnath dropped a bombshell recently. In an interview, the aerospace engineer revealed that he had undergone a huge health crisis during the launch of Aditya-L1.
In an interview with Tarmak Media House, the aerospace engineer revealed he was diagnosed with stomach cancer on the day of launch. He later underwent an operation and chemotherapy.
Somnath admitted that he had been experiencing persistent health issues since the launch of the Chandrayaan 3 mission. However, still, the diagnosis was a complete shock. “There were some health issues during the Chandrayaan-3 mission launch. However, it was not clear to me at the time, I did not have a clear understanding of it," he told the Malayalam publication.
“On the day Aditya-L1 was launched, I conducted a scan in the morning of that day. That was when I realised that I had a growth in my stomach. I gained a clue about it as soon as the launch occurred,” ISRO chief revealed.
The ISRO head said that he had been cured. After he was diagnosed he underwent an emergency operation and chemotherapy to stall growth of the cancerous cells. However, he would have to undergo regular health screening. “ I will be undergoing regular check-ups every year. I will be undergoing scans. But now, I am completely cured. I have resumed my duties,” he told the publication.
