Madhya Pradesh, yearning for 'badlav' (change), appreciation of BJP's Laadli Behna yojana seem to be two common factors working for Congress and BJP, respectively in all regions of this large and diverse state.
After being in power for nearly two-decades, the BJP is facing a twin challenge of fatigue in its voters and more so in its workers towards the state leadership, while the Congress is focusing on local issues which seems to be benefiting from anti-incumbency.
Rahul Patel, 23, who has come from nearby Bareli town in Bhopal and works with an e-commerce firm, says he is earning Rs 10,000 after doing B-tech, as there are less job opportunities. He feels it is time to change the government.
«Badlav zaruri hai aur Congress ke elava option kya hai (Change is required but there is no option besides Congress),» Patel said, a sentiment which is visible among the youth in the urban pockets of the state, who raise issue of unemployment and paper leak in MP.
However, he adds that he belongs to the Lodhi caste, and that his family has voted BJP for several times and may do so again. Among women voters there is some appreciation and gratitude towards the Laadli Behna Yojana, under which the state government has been giving a fixed amount to the selected women beneficiaries.
