The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) recently reported that there are 67 confirmed active TB cases as of 24th January 2025. Out of them, 60 are reported in Wyandotte County, while 7 others are in Johnson County. Apart from the active cases, a total of 79 latent TB cases have also been found. Two of these occurred in Johnson County, while 77 occurred in Wyandotte County.
As per KDHE's records, the outbreak first appeared back in January 2024. Thus far, it has caused two fatalities, both of which occurred last year.
According to CDC, this outbreak is «the largest documented TB outbreak in U.S. history since the 1950s.» Health officials warn that this is not over yet. While the outbreak is certainly the greatest documented type, officials said the risk to the general public and residents of neighboring counties is «very low.» The department is still operating under the CRC process and investigating while mitigating the issue according to CDC procedures.
