Keep tobacco and alcohol ads and their proxies off IPL, Health ministry tells cricket board
health ministry has asked the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the cricket board to ban all forms of tobacco and alcohol advertising, including surrogate ads, at stadiums and related events, as well as during telecast sessions on national television.
In a letter to IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal, director general of health services Atul Goel also sought doing away with the sale of tobacco and alcohol products in all affiliated events and sports facilities.
The letter, dated March 5 and also addressing the Board of Control for Cricket in India, asked the sports bodies to discourage sportspersons (including commentators) from directly or indirectly endorsing products linked to alcohol or tobacco.
Cricket players are role models for youngsters, Goel said. IPL, being the largest sports platform in the country, has a social and moral obligation to promote public health and support health initiatives of the government, he wrote in the letter, which ET has seen.
India is experiencing a significant burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) — cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic lung disease, diabetes, hypertension, etc. — which account for more than 70% deaths annually, he wrote.
