RG Kar Medical College students' protest turned into a mass movement on Tuesday with actors, singers, intellectuals, senior doctors, political leaders and students of other universities joining the protest while demanding justice for the rape and murder of a second year Post-Graduate student last Friday.
The huge protests were a reminder of the anti-Nandigram movement days. The medical students continued to protest across West Bengal and other parts of the country.
Earlier today, doctors and medical students held protests at AIIMS Delhi and other hospitals after the Federation of All India Medical Association called for a nationwide shutdown of OPD services from Tuesday, showing solidarity against the doctor. They raised slogans and demanded justice for the murdered student.
Aparna Sen, an actor, who had participated in the anti-Nandigram movement also, said, «I have come here as a citizen of the city. We condemn the brutal incident. I support the demands of the students. I have come here to support them. I am ashamed as a citizen of Kolkata.»
«The state government should take immediate steps to ensure safety and security of the state-run hospitals. Exemplary punishment should be taken against the culprits. Civic volunteers' entry must be stopped in the hospitals. Police will have to be answerable. Why did police try to call it suicide despite seeing her body? We demand answers for these questions,» she added.
