government is looking to set up a National Centre of Excellence (NCoE) for Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics (AVGC) and Extended Reality (XR) in Mumbai while also proposing a policy on AVGC to spur growth of this sunrise sector and unlock its full potential, several people told ET.
The NCoE will be built in Film City, Mumbai where the Maharashtra government has allotted 10 acres for the project costing more than Rs 1,000 crore.
«It will be a Rs 1000+ crore proposal where FICCI and CII will be the industry leads and the government will have a minority share. The government will be holding only 48% share and 52% will be shared equally between FICCI and CII,» said one of the persons cited above. This person added that the goal is to set up an 'anchor institution' akin to the IITs and IIMs.
«This will be the first of its kind in India and the government is keen to set up such a centre so that India does not lose out on the opportunity in the AVGC sector because this is a new avenue for growth, much like IT was,» he said.
As per the AVGC Promotion Taskforce report in 2022, the dynamic nature of this industry is driving the need for setting up an industry-led body to guide policies for the sector’s growth, establish frameworks for AVGC education
