US President Donald Trump has now reportedly and officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the ‘Gulf of America’ via an executive order while directing the Secretary of the Interior to implement the change, reported The Wrap.
According to The Wrap, US President Donald Trump actually signed a proclamation declaring the date of February 9th as ‘Gulf of America Day’. US President Donald Trump stated that the renaming recognizes the integral role of the Gulf in America's past and future. The order actually stipulates the US segment of the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed with federal maps and documents updated accordingly.
Following the executive order from US President Donald Trump, Google Maps actually updated its platform for US based users to reflect the new name while users in Mexico see ‘Gulf of Mexico’ and at the same time, others see both names, asserted The Wrap. Now, the FAA and US Coast Guard are also incorporating the new name.
However, the Associated Press (AP) will still continue to use the ‘Gulf of Mexico’ while citing its 400 year huge historical significance and global recognizability. During such ongoing times, in response, the White House reportedly barred an AP reporter from an Oval Office event after the news outlet declined to adhere to the new name, noted The Wrap.
The AP called the White House action severely ‘alarming’ and a violation of the First Amendment while The White House Correspondents Association has also condemned the action of the White House, noted The Wrap.
