Revanth Reddy, who is set to take oath as chief minister of the state on Thursday, faces significant challenges as he takes over the state's leadership. As he takes charge, he must not only tackle the implementation of the «six guarantees» but also navigate opposition from within his own party and from the opposition. The state's financial constraints and debt burden further add to the challenges ahead.
It remains to be seen how the new government will address these hurdles and work towards fulfilling its promises in the coming years.
His primary task will be to find the necessary funds to fulfill the «six guarantees» promised by the Congress party during the recent assembly polls. These guarantees is deemed to have played a crucial role in the party's victory, but now the challenge lies in meeting the financial requirements to deliver on these promises.
One of the most appealing guarantees is the provision of free travel for women in Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) buses. According to state government sources, cited by Press Trust of India, the state transporter generates around Rs 2,500 crore annually from women passengers. To implement this scheme, the Congress government would need to compensate the corporation with the same amount, which is currently burdened with accumulated losses of Rs 6,000 crore.
Another promise made by the Congress party is the waiver of up to Rs 2 lakh in farm loans. The previous government had allocated Rs 21,000 crore for waiving up to Rs 1 lakh. To fulfill this promise, the Congress government will need to allocate at least Rs 35,000 crore over the next five years.
