Cindy and her family settled in the UK region of Bolton, after fleeing Cameroon, where they had a constant fear for their lives, according to reports. In UK, they were granted the asylum status years later and the boxer and her family had to go through a lot in order for her to qualify and participate as an axe boxer, who is currently in peak form at the Paris Olympics.
This year, the concept of a Refugee Olympic Team is in place, which allows people who do not have a home nation, to still participate in the Paris Olympics, just like any other participant would. This has helped Cindy to get a berth at the Olympics, which she is putting to great use, with her performance. She still trains with Team Great Britain and uses their facilities, even wanting to participate for the nation at the Olympics, but could not do so following passport regulations, as she was not able to procure a British passport in time and had to be content with playing for the Refugee Olympic Team instead.
